No, leave the modem on the XP machine.

I think ICS is set up - because you are getting the gateway info on the Win98 PC and it is being given an IP address in the right range.

The only thing on the Win98 PC to try is to see if you can access the internet.

Win98 ---> WinXP ---> DSL modem ---> Internet

If you can't, check the DNS entries - they should be the same on both PCs.

So basically if the 98 machine can't see the Xp machine on the network, it can still access the net through it. Do I have to set up a new connection then as at the moment I have it set to connect through the LAN with the automatically detect settings box ticked. It won't connect through this at the moment

the DNS server is the same as on XP hope thats good

I'm not concerned that it can't see the XP machine at the moment. If ICS is set up correctly, it should be able to access the internet.

We need to ascertain if it has DNS entries set correctly.

Are the DNS entries the same on both machines ?

Post the DNS values you get for both machines here

That's good, it is picking that up correctly too!

If you click on Start, Run and type in COMMAND and press OK, you should get a DOS screen up.

Type in:

tracert microsoft.com

and press return.

Do this on both machines.

Do you get an error message on the Win98 PC ?

Win XP machine after tryping ipconfig/all gives following:
Windows IP config heading
Ethernet adaptor network bridge heading; IP 192.168.0.1
PPP internet adaptor

Win98 IPconfig gives DNS servers 192.168.0.1

but then in the ethernet, it gives an ip address of 192.168.0.35

The ip address for the Win98 PC of 192.168.0.35 seems correct. The DNS of 192.168.0.1 doesn't look right.

Which ISP are you using ?

Your Win98 result with tracert indicates that the DNS isn't correct.

I've just had a look at UKOnline and it says:

Primary DNS 212.135.1.36
Secondary DNS 195.40.1.36

If you right-click on Network Neighborhood on the Win98 PC and select Properties.

Locate the TCP/IP entry for the network card and click on Properties.

Click on the Gateway tab and check it has an entry 192.168.0.1 - if not add it.
Click on the DNS Configuration tab and check that "Enable" DNS is selected.

Add the DNS IP addresses given above into the section entitled: DNS Server search order. When done, you need to click OK until you are out of the network configuration. It should then ask you to restart the PC.

Once rebooted, can you access the internet ?
