NEF format photographs

In the RAW v JPEG thread I'd mentioned I was having problems opening (in Adobe Photoshop) the RAW images i'd taken on my Nikon digital SLR.

Seems Nikon's RAW images are called NEF files and that what I have.

Does anybody know anything about dealing with NEF files ?

Seems to be but I can't open them in photoshop. There is an option to open a raw file but if you select this is does not 'see' the NEF files.

If you go to 'open as' - select RAW then choose your NEF image, it opens them as RAW but all you see is a grey texture.

Did you not get the software to open it with the camera? I think my boss uses "Nikon digital capture" or something, but I always thought he could use photoshop aswell? Ill ask for you.

Cheers. I got Nikon Picture project with the camera but that's fairly basic and I stopped using it once I got Adobe Photoshop. Nikon Capture (which would do) came with the camera but it was just a 30 day thing so I didn't even bother instaling it.
