Advice needed please - Metacam

Loki is in the wars yet again. A lump 'appeared' on his leg and he's been worrying at it so much that it has become infected. A visit to the vet this evening resulted in him being prescribed Amoxicillin antibiotics and Metacam. The Metacam is apparently anti-inflammatory.

Is there anything I should know about/be concerned about with Metacam? It seems to have been prescribed for 4 days and I have to give him a double dose for the first day - today.

Thanks in advance.

The only thing you really need to know is make sure it is given with food but i expect you've already been told that by the vet or receptionist. Apart from that Metacam is fine.

Edited just to say i've never heard of a double dose being given normally it's just given once a day and you give the amount of ml per kg's of bodyweight.

So sorry to hear about Loki. A double dose to start off with is quite usual I remember coz Cassie was on this. It CAN upset some dog's stomachs so just watch out for that and always give it with food, the same as you would with the Rimadyl's. It's a good drug is Metacam from my experience with it, you see an instant result with it, especially when acting as a painkiller, so at least you'll know Loki's out of pain once you've administered it. Good luck with him, I hope that nasty lump heals well.xxx

Thank you!

I just gave it to him and he seems to like it!

I was given (invited to purchase!) a collar to help with his licking/chewing at the area - that should be interesting!

The vet seemed to think the lump started off as a pressure sore so nothing to worry about there.

Thanks again.

No problems with Metacam here either & works very well (IME).
Hope Loki's leg heals quickly & good luck with the 'collar'!!!

Bran was on metacam for years with no adverse effects. It can give some dogs gastric upsets but mine have all been OK with it.

My Belgian Shepherd has been on Metacam for 5 years now for her arthritis. She gets very good pain relief with it and has had no problems at all with it. We started on a double dose and, as others have said, it should be given with or after food.

If he throws up at all stop the metacam straight away.

It can be fatal-----however that is VERY rare.

I have a couple of dogs on it and have used it a lot in the past. You should have a leaflet with it. If not read the on line leaflet.
