A new twist on a traditional Irish meal

A classic dish in Ireland is (boiled) bacon, spuds and cabbage. That is something that I like but it can be a bit boring so tonight I decided to pep it up a bit.
I cooked the cabbage in about an inch of water with the lid on the pan, so it was steamed and not soggy. While that was doing, I slung 6 peeled and halved mushrooms, five cherry tomatoes that had gone soft and a good handful of diced boiled bacon (cold from the day before) into the deep fat fryer and nuked it until everything was turning brown. I drained the cabbage, added loads of real butter and black pepper, then the fry up and stirred it together. I left out the spuds as I had chips earlier!
Delicious!

Well I'm Irish and I [B]Hate[B] cabbage!! But I cook this dinner for my family sometimes. My Mam and my Nana before her always kept a little of the water back from cooking the bacon and added this to the water to cook the cabbage in. Said it gives it a fantastic flavour. Alternatively try throwing some rashers into the cabbage while its cooking!! Just some other ideas, but your way sounds lovely I must say!!

I like steamed cabbage! Also like it stir-fried (especially in spring rolls!!!), or even raw It does have to stay a bit crunchy though...

An improvement tonight! (It's a large piece of bacon )
Same as before, but diced spud still in it's skin slung in the deep fat fryer and the final mix given a liberal dose of worcester sauce - not very Irish though
The great thing is, the whole lot only takes about 5 minutes

Soda bread.... hmmmmm ..... one of the many nice surprises I found when I moved here. Doesn't it smell odd when it's being toasted, though!

I had a bit of a surprise buying the cabbage. They call them "York" cabbages here. In fact it's what I have always known as a Savoy cabbage. And it's BIG.

Good job I live alone or maybe that's why
