Calming a pup down?

How do you do it??

Lily, now 18 weeks, sometimes gets so excited she's completely over the top and can't seem to calm herself down, I have to hold her and put her in a sit and gently stroke her while talking calmly until she's 'come down'. She initially wriggles and throws herself about until she starts to wind down.

Is this the right way to go about it ? Any other ways of calming her down ??

I'll let you know when I have the answer myself.

I quite like 'excitable' dogs (as long as they are not aggressive or destructive). Well, that is to say, given the choice between a nutcase excitable one and one who hardly looks up when you come in - I'd choose the nutcase!

Usually indicative of a need for a run on the fields in this house

I have one whose bum doesn't touch the floor unless food is involved. I was told he would calm down after a couple of years!!!!!He is now 8! Wouldn't change him for the world. At least he's not boring LOL

I once had a rabbit like that - we called him Basil the Psycho.
I was told he would calm down if castrated.

Not true - it seemed to really pix him off and he got worse!

Oh no I didn't mean I don't want her to be excited - she gets over excited and goes too far, almost manic

I couldn't stop her being lively even if I wanted too I love the fact that she's fun but she goes completely ott and can get extremely annoying to my other dogs, who are too soft to tell her off

I sympathise then - I've never had to deal with an over excitable dog who had other dogs in the house. Nor an over excitable rabbit who had other rabbits around!

That tiny black rabbit was DEFINITELY the most DANGEROUS animal I've ever owned. I lost a fingernail to it and my daughter (the bint who was responsible for us taking in EVERY bleedin' animal that no one else wanted at the rescue) had holes in all her clothes and still bears some of the scars from it! It would lie in wait for the cats and go for them!

But hey - as with all our other pets - we still loved it and looked after it.

We are from the breed of humans who have the invisible tattoo on their foreheads that only animals can see - it says MUG!

If mine couldn't 'LURE' the cats to it - it would wait until it saw them lying down enjoying the sunshine and do this maniac leaping over them to taunt them performance!

But, as with all our pets, past and present - it was worth its weight in gold for laughter and smiles! Animals DO make me laugh!
