Im going on holiday but have a 4 month old puppy is this too young to leave her

Hello,
Im new to this forum and would love any advise, we already have a wonderful little jack russell/norfolk terrier. who is a rescue and approx 4 years old. We want a friend for him now and looked at some parson jack russell pups we are going to have one of the little girls who will be 2 months old when we collect her on 3rd January.
I had already planned to go on holiday but not paid for in feb is this too soon to leave a just over 3 months old pup?
we would be leaving them together in a milatary kennels?
we normally leave sammy dog with friends but because we will have an addition to our family it is now difficult to ask people to mind them.
Any advise welcome thanks

your house training will seriously suffer. Will they be in a kennel together? as if together all the time your elder dog may get annoyed as puppies do hassle for play and nip when teething.
Are they heated kennels? as you pup will be used to the warmth of a house.
Personnally i would postpone the holiday or go somewhere where you can take the dogs

I would say it is much, much too soon. Can you delay your holiday? If not, can you find another litter and get a pup when you return? Those early days are so important and your new pup with have almost no human contact in a kennel. Any socialising and house training you do will be set right back. I would definitely not leave a 3 month old pup in kennels if it could be avoided.

I have sometimes looked after young pups when the owners have gone away. It is never ideal and no way should a pup that young be kenneled.

If it was me I would cancel the holiday, I personally wouldnt leave a pup that young in boarding kennels.

If you are defo goin then the only other thing I would suggest is to ask a friend or family member to look after both dogs at your house.
They could keep up with toilet trainning, and give the pup the attention it needs.
It would be much better for the two dogs to bond that way, and they could give the older dog some time out from the pup if the pup were to get abit much for the older dog.
That would be much better in my opin, then them being in kennels.

Hope this helps.

By 3 months most of the socialization needs to already have been done. Past 12 weeks, they are slower to accept new things, so missing a week isn't near the problem it would be earlier.

I would be more concerned about disease. Talk to your vet. He may want to do immunizations 2 weeks before hoping they will take. Titers might be better.

As long as the puppy has enough space to eliminate away from its bed, I don't think it will hurt housebreaking.

Stuff and nonsense Labman!! At this age they will be going out and seeing new sights every day. Socialisation is an ongoing process which lasts for months.

labman is wrong about the house training. It will affect the training.
Also the pup needs socializing and spending a week in kennels is not going to expose her to such things.

I wouldnt kennel a pup before 6 months unless in emergency.

I would consider myself stil training our 15 month old and would never leave him in kennels, although that's kind of a different issue.

One thing you must know is that dogs like routine and it can take months to settle them into this. One break in this (even just one week in a kennel) can set you back months, even put you back to the beginning and is just not worth it.

Can you go on holiday in Feb as planned and then look for another pup?

p.s. Hi Hades, not seen you on here for a while xx
