All I want for Xmas is...a puppy

Tesco have published their Xmas catalogue and in it is an advert for a blackboard with the words......all I want for Xmas is a puppy..

If you see the madness in this, please make you feeling known on tesco's .....face......book page !

Tesco? Never heard of it. Maybe the country difference is the issue. Or maybe I am living under a rock.

I don't see the "madness" either. But maybe I am missing something?

Around Christmas time here... you see tons of random commercials with kids opening up boxes only to find the classic Golden Retriever or yellow Labrador puppy with a red ribbon on it's neck inside.

Hmm... I don't get it.

Tesco is a big supermarket chain over here.

The issue is that dogs should not be seen as just Christmas presents. All the hustle and bustle, the stress the noise, visitors... Christmas is simply not (or rather, should not be) a good time to bring a puppy home - especially on the day!
People get their kids puppies and then just turf them out to rescues or rehoming sites when the novelty wears off and they realise you can't just take a puppies batteries out and forget about it...
There has been a campaign running for years now:

I'm sorry you don't get it, most people here will get it I think.

Puppies are NOT Xmas presents, it's a message ALL RESCUES here in the UK will promote , owning dogs should be thought through , it's not a whim decision or something added to a Xmas list that gets discarded once Xmas is over....which sadly rescue centres will tell you happens to often.

Maybe you don't have the same problem in the states but here rescue centres see a big increase in their intake numbers when the Christmas puppies become a bit older and people realise they are hard work, need exercise, aren't happy when their families have to go back to work after the holidays, are still weeing in the house, getting too big etc etc.

Many rescues won't rehome out dogs in December and I've seen breeders that do the same with their puppies

....but then you go on preloved and the like and see ads saying "ready just in time for christmas!"

MJ from G might not 'get it' but I believe it is a fact that more dogs end up in rescues or shelters shortly after xmas than at any other time of the year.

What's the saying? A dog is not just for Christmas - it is for life? Summat like that. Giving a puppy to young chilldren is a 'quick fix' pressie.
