Archie got attacked

Yesterday when we were on our walk, I was sitting on the grass with Archie and my sister, and a guy with another wire fox terrier came past. His dog (who was HUGE) came and said hi to Archie and they played together for a bit, had some fun, and then they guy left with his dog.

Then about 10 minutes later the dog came running back to us, I thought he wanted to play more with Archie, the other dog was wagging his tail at Archie, then Archie rolled over and the other dog just snapped and attacked him They were right in front of my face, Archie was screaming, the other dog was growling, I kept trying to get the dog off Archie I had my hand right in front of that dog's face, I don't know how I didn't get my hand ripped off. Then the owner finally came and got control of his dog and I walked off with Archie chatting to him as if nothing had happened when all I wanted to do was burst into tears. I was very upset. My sister told me afterwards that the guy picked his dog up and smacked him really hard on the bum and face.

We checked Archie over and he has no punctures or anything, no wounds, he was very upset for a minute after that happened byt 2 minutes later it seemed he had forgotten and he went to play with a dog we know, a friendly cocker. I think I was more upset than he was, afterwards we went to the pub and the guy was there with his dog, I talked to him and he said that terriers don't really like other dogs, it's in their natures and that Archie will probably turn aggressive when he's older He told me that his dog used to live with another fox terrier who used to tease him by rolling over :smt017 and that was probably why the dog had snapped when he saw Archie roll over.

*sigh*... it was horrible.

stupid question coming up:.... WHY THE HELL CAN'T PEOPLE KEEP AGGRESSIVE DOGS ON A LEAD IN A PARK FULL OF OTHER DOGS??? :smt071

poor Archie - at least hes alright now - I keep my two on lead around puppies because they can be a bit narky around very young dogs.

Jack was atttacked when he was a pup and he was left with a puncture wound and he had horrible bite marks all over his body - still to this day he will not walk past the dog that did it

Awww, Tuti
Give Archie a big hug from Teagan and me!

Teagan got attacked when she was a pup. The lady was standing with her 2 grandkids, and black lab-cross (off lead). We walked past (I held Teagan's collar, as we were on a bridge over water), and her dog attacked Teagan!
She stood there and watched! Her g-kids were screaming, so I kicked her dog to get it off.
She turned to me and said "Oh, he doesn't like boxer dogs"
"SHE'S NOT A BOXER DOG" I replied, mad!
"Ohh, well, he doesn't like some dogs."

I'm sure Archie will be fine, like you said, you were more upset than him!
*hugs*

Thanks guys

I still feel terrible just thinking about it...he will need triple socialisation with other dogs from now on... especially big ones as he's still funny with them

You did the right thing tuti - acted as though nothing was wrong. It would have been a bad mistake had you fussed Archie. Taking him to play with another dog was a smart move. Dog fights are very scary, but it is often just a lot of noise and posturing. Don't take any notice of the pub Einstein

It is really, really, annoying when unreliable dogs are allowed off-lead

it can be really frustrating when you are trying to socialise your dog and teach them manners with other dogs when people allow their dogs to fight and not see anything wrong with it - my biggest pet hate is when my dogs are on lead and a dog comes running up circling me and I get tangled in my dog leads - and the owner just stands and laughs and says awh they just want to play - AAAAGGGHHH

hey tuti, try not to worry bout it unfortunetely these things happen, thank god archie wasnt hurt!
All i can say is try ur hardest to make sure all the next experiences with other dogs are good
indie got attacked by another staffie when she was about 5 months old and it took me a few months of good socialisation for her not to be afraid of any dog that looked like a staffie.

its good he wasnt hurt cos i doubt it will affect him as much as if he was. at least he was playing again after, its always a good sign

Thanks SB It's one of the hardest things I've had to do, all I wanted to do was cuddle him and apologise... I had to wait till his tail and ears had perked up before checking him over for any wounds but thankfully there was nothing, except one of his gums where he lost a tooth was bleeding a bit but nothing on his body.

I know if Archie ever showed any signs of aggression he would be straight back on the lead and end of story... why can't people think before they let their dogs offlead?
