13 week old puppy humping teddy!

Our 13 week old pup has already started humping his teddy.
Should l stop this, as l'm sure he isn't going to grow out of it any time soon! He hasn't started humping our legs yet, but l'm sure that's next on his list.
Any advice would be welcome please!

Hi Debbie puppies often get over excited when playing and in their excitement exhibit inappropriate behave like humping.

People are often amused/embarrassed by the behaviour and laugh or pay attention to the puppy in some way (even shouting at the puppy is giving attention) which is in effect rewarding the behaviour and so the puppy continues to do it often into adulthood.

It is best to either ignore the behaviour no word no eye contact or distract with a toy. If you do this the dog should eventually stop the humping because the behaviour is not being rewarded with attention

A good way to distract without giving attention is (as soon as you see he is going to start the humping) to have a favourite toy to hand, don't look at the pup, start throwing ball up in air and catching it. Make sure though that you don't look at pup or give any encouragement to come to you. When pup notices and comes over, play a game with him.

If he's only humping the teddy, it may also be an idea to remove it for a few days to see if the behaviour transfers to other objects
