Concerns about surgery for "Older" dog

As some of you know, my 10 year old dog is having hip surgery in May to
treat her hip dysplasia.

I am, of course, very concerned about this for a variety of reasons. One
issue that really worries me is her age. I am concerned about the
success rate and recovery period for an older dog who has surgery.
I'm not sure if she will be having a Femoral Head Ostectomy surgery
(that's where they cut the head of the femur bone off so that it's no
long rattling around in the hip socket) or a Complete Hip Replacement.
I still have to have a consultation with the surgeon about my options.

Can anyone share their experiences with an older dog having surgery
and put my fears to rest.

Thank you!!

I don't have any experience but I hope it all goes well. Try not to worry too much, they know what they're doing xx

My 15 year old had cancer in his leg, he eventually lost it as it was crumbling away and would of taken over the rest of his body. It was taken off right up to the hip. Took him a while to recover and he lost a lot of weight, I didnt think he would recover as it was such a huge operation but tests previous to surgery showed he was fit & healthy and had no reason why he shouldnt recover. It was about 3 weeks later before I felt we were out of the woods. He is now as far as tests show cancer free, with 3 good legs and a happy little chap. A bit cantancarous but most old men are!
I wouldnt worry 10 is still a young age as long as your pet is fit & healthy in every other way. They wont operate unless she has a sound heart. Im sure she has.
This is Barney (blonde) with his leg strapped up when it was crumbling, the lady with her paw on his leg is my NI, she somehow knew it was poorly:-

I was hoping that Luz would come along to reassure you that old dogs can make a full recovery after a major operation

One of my previous dogs underwent a general anaesthetic at the age of 13 with no problems. It was not such major surgery but GAs are always a bit of a worry with the oldies I am sure that your vet will do the pre-op tests to ensure that her system can withstand the procedure

Thank you everyone. I appreciate your support and well wishes. I do feel
a bit better. She is like my daughter and my only family and I would be
absolutely devastated if anything happened to her.

Luz, I'm sorry about your dog. The fact that he's 15 and still thriving
gives me hope. Your dogs look very happy and contented. I love how
your other dog has her paw on him. They definitely know when something
is wrong.

oldies with the right pre tests and health in all other ways are fine with op's.
they may take a bit longer to recover but thats all, if they know a dog has any type of heart problem they can always adjust any thing to compensate.
good luck i hope it all works out well for you both.
luz i remeber when you was the same with barney........ its hard but without what would he be like now.
any way i haven't seen any pics of the old lad for a while...........hint.

Thanks. She's got some ailments (lyme disease, fatty tumors), but
nothing that would affect her from getting surgery... I don't think.
It just breaks my heart that my little baby has to go through this.
She is such a wonderful, amazing dog who deserves to live a pain free
life just like all dogs do. Where's St. Francis when you need him??
