I would go for Max.

There's no point in calling him either Maximus or Maximilian because it will only end up be shortened to Max in the end.

I've got a Max, but never in a million years would I shout out Maxi-moo either in private or public. He would think I've gone barking mad.

Maxie yes, but defiantly not Maxi-moo. Plus that's got more letters than Maxwell, so how can that be an abbreviation?

I know

I would never shout it out loud! It's more of a cuddle-on-the-sofa name...

A vagabond is a (generally impoverished) itinerant person. Such people may be called tramps, rogues, hobos or schnorrer.

my poor wee boy {}

actually he is rather evil to rose, latching on to her cheek and not letting go
