Interestingly there was a litter widely advertised in the Obedience world with an ASD sire & WSD/BC mother, despite some going to experienced Obedience handlers, neither has been seen in the ring & the litter must be 2 years old by now

But that is true of lots of dogs, crosses or pedigree!

Why would it make a difference if the BC/ASD was the dam or the sire; what makes one advisable and one not and does this apply to all cross breeds?

This is why they`re a problem...

It`s not the professional breeders and puppy farms churning out the `jacksh*ts and bullypoos`. It`s the venal owners of an un-neutered dog with a mate up the road with similar who also wants to make enough for a nice couple of weeks in Falaraki anna widescreen.

Perhaps it's just where I live (low income/high unemployment area), but dogs advertised as crosses or with fancy names seem to go at the same sort of price. Pedigrees don't seem to command the fantastic prices I've seen them at elsewhere either (even those boasting parents health tested etc). I've only seen one advert for a litter of Chi's that came anywhere near the thousand pound mark. The average cost seems to be between £250 and £500 depending on the breed or cross with more at the lower end than the higher.

Never seen a 'free to good home' or very low priced dog or pup advertised in the local rag so far, but I don't tend to look every week

I do think the demonising of cute names is a little counter-productive. If it makes someone happy to call their dog's breed a name rather than list the cross, I can't see the harm - the dog is still the same dog

As for prices, as with everything else, they will only command a high price if people are willing to pay it

Precisely and as we have already seen on this board, it matters not if your dog is a x breed or a pedigree, if the purchaser chooses a breeder who carries out no health checks, does not KC register a dog and lets them go too early it is the dog and the purchaser that suffers.

Price should not be the SOLE indicator of where to obtain a puppy, the key issues are health and temperament.

If you cannot afford to purchase a puppy from breeders who put these at the top of the list then get a rescue pup, there are, unfortunately plenty about, at least you will not be rewarding the unscrupulous breeder!

Tbh not got a clue, not because i couldnt be arssed to ask or anything but he's my first ever dog and was truely not aware of the fad going on with designer dog's. and again knew nothing about dogs before hand, no i didnt get sammy due to the name of the breeds he's mixed but puerly i fell in love with him then did my reading on both dog's. but then i found this site and it is despressing that the dogs are being bred for money and for peeps who want a hard dog. luckily my sammy has been marded to the point anyone can walk through the gate and get maulled by his tongue. but they will fall into wrong hands. and as i said before maybe we need a dog license in this country, and a course for peeps to go on before getting a dog. an also make it compulsary for health checks from all breeders.

Many people struggle to get a rescue dog though because of all the blanket policies. Everyone knows about ones like Dogs Trust, RSPCA etc but how many know about the smaller rescues where they may be looked at individually rather than ruled out straight away because of age of children, type of houseing etc.

Then there's the problem that people don't want to wait for a puppy. They want a pup and they want it NOW, not in 2 years time. God forbid they have to wait to find the right new family member!
