My two only tug together if I get them started otherwise they don't bother, I as well do not leave the tug toys where they have access to them if I am not there though.

We play tug all the time its the only game she ever plays. She lets go when told or if i let go as i usually do she runs and plays with her prize for a few mins then comes back for another go. Phoebe starts the game. She is a sore loser though if it looks like im winning she will move up the tugger bit by bit then starts nibbling my fingers till i let go.

Mine all play tug together fine, I only step in if they start to get overly boisterous.
They seem to adjust the strength of their tugging to suit the opposition, for instance the Staffie will play much more gently with the Pug than he would with the Dobermann where he will give it his best shot to end up the victor and it can then get a bit ruff.
