There have always been, and always will be longcoated Malamutes because as Mo said, most lines carry the longcoat gene.
The reason the longcoat is classed as a fault is because in the Arctic conditions of their homeland, longcoats would not be able to shake off the ice and snow that gathers in the coat and they would likely die.
Whether a dog is longcoated or not makes no bearing on the dogs working ability.
I am aware that some European kennels use good quality longcoats in their breeding programs from time to time in order to improve/maintain correct coat texture
