The result is a lot of fat, hyper labs who go totally nuts when they do actually get walked and have no training or self restraint....but that's fine because "he's friendly!". It's not the dogs fault, it tends to be lazy owners who get them because they think they will automatically be "easy". The lazy owner would never go to a proper breeder....so make that fat, hyper, poorly bred, under exercised labs and you can see why I tend to skirt around them. They are left to belt around at their own devices. Mostly the dogs mean well, they are just totally nuts, but I've met some fairly huffy ones too (I suspect lack of exercise means also lack of socialisation, these labs tend to put up hackles and be defensive). The Lab situation around here makes me sad
Spot on!

Have to confess one of my bug bears is owners of young labs who think it's ok to let their ten tons of adolescent exuberance bounce all over my dogs because "they only want to play". They may not have an aggressive bone in their body but they could still do mine some damage, never mind the fact that it winds my dogs up.

I had this same problem with a choccie lab and Louie - he was over exuberant and knocked my 25kg Louie over - I was furious - the owner could do nothing but say his name over and over and over again and he wasn't listening at all. Louie is gentle with little dogs - some anyway. He was very curious of Ludi at the first Dogsey walk we went on. Didn't get on so well with Mojo though - poor little girlie - sorry Mojo!

But I do know when to get Louie to calm down or put him back on lead.

I quite like labs in general but hate owners of them that don't reign in their natural over exuberance, bumped into one at westonbirt a couple of weeks ago with the worst body language I've seen in ages, completely stiff, lips curled and a low growl every now and again, thankfully Griffin read the signals and walked straight past but the owner did nothing at all, just walked on past completely ignoring the dog .

lab and staffie owners.
what is it about many of them that makes them think their dogs dont need leads?

staffie walking thru the streets near traffic and labs bounding out of cars, thru fields, onto anyone and anything, then back into the car.

neither scenario includes an owner carrying a lead with them.

sadly, i see both scenarios all too often.

In fairness, I see plenty of dogs in my area who are walked without leads - never seen a Lab or a Staffie yet though.

Owners who walk dogs without leads, near traffic etc, are my pet hate - I think they are unbelievably careless to the point of being neglectful.

I tend to be very wary of black labradors, I've been bitten by two black labradors and another one chased me to my front door and I know it would have mauled me had it got me as it bounced off my front door when i managed to get in.
Another black Labrador has bitten Milo and two more have gone for him and Ellie. So as you can imagine I'm very wary of black labradors I'll always stand between my dogs and one if one approaches. However have met lovely yellow and chocolate labs

Well I'm am a 30 something mum of 2 that happens to own a delightful black lab who is always on her lead and in fact walks to heel remarkably well ...

Please don't forget to use your "some, may, often" and not your "all, are, everyones" because personally I'm quite a good lab owner...

Lol
