Last year when Flynn damaged his cruciate falling down a rabbit hole, I was given Metacam which is an anti-inflammatory. Literally, the following day he was completely back to normal, I just couldnt believe it. There was no sign of limping and he seemed happy to use it. This time, now he has damaged the other knee, it took a couple of days for the Metacam to kick in but the result was the same again - no signs of injury.

But it's such a shame that such a young dog potentially has cruciate problems. And going back to what Azz said about it being a bigger dog problem, apparently one of the most common breeds to suffer with this are Yorkshire Terriers. I'm pretty sure there were a couple of other little breeds on the list too but cant remember without digging the mag out.

Dillons breeder has just got back to me offering me a crate if I need one and to say she has been asking around the Bernese owners/friends and no one has known a Bernese to have a cruciate go this young. She was saying and this is the worst case scenario she groomed a friends Bernese last week and he was fine while he was with her she was then told he jumped out of the car and went lame a few days before and she took him along to the vet a few days after and they did x-rays and he had cancer he is having his leg amputated. Of course she isn't wanting to scare me but she now feels we need him x-rayed as soon as possible just to make sure it is the cruciate or not or possibly something else but so that cancer can be ruled out. I am not going to think about that at the moment. I do value her opinion she has owend and bred the breed for over 20 years and knows many people in the Bernese cirlce and is anxious as we are to know what it is and that he is going to be fine.

It's not you Lynn! Even my vet said he couldn't imagine what I had done in a previous life but it must have been awful as I have such bad luck with my dogs - spinal surgery, epilepsy, shoulder injury, osteosarcoma, chipped knee bone! I have seriously wondered whether I should have any more dogs! (as I couldn't live without dogs, that isn't an option........)

Lynn you are doing nothing wrong you are a marvelous owner. I know where your coming from though feeling that way as although i have had dogs live to good old ages many have not. My two CKCS one died aged 4 and the other age 7 with auto immune disease, Then I lost milo at 4 and Shady at 5. That was 4 dogs in a row. Many years ago I also had a crossbreed that was hit by a car and killed age 2 years sand my Doberman died of cancer age 6years.
I felt I must be a jinx on dogs, that I must be an awful owner and that I didn't deserve dogs, yet I knew I had loved them with all my heart and been so prompt getting them to the vets. They got the best health treatment often with top specialists in Newmarket. So where was I going wrong.
But people who knew me personally very well, said that these dogs were mean't to find me as they would get the best care, love and help in their short lives.
I hope that is true as a broken heart once is hard to bear but that many times really knocked me down to rock bottom.
I am having tears here thinking about them as they were like my children and a big part of my family and life.
Even now kyiro has his feet problems, luckily not life threatening and lily suffers allergies and sometimes her throat seems to swell but so far a piriton has got her back to normal. They both suffer occasional colitis. But hopefully we will get through the years with lots of happiness and little trauma, although I do wonder if I will ever own a really healthy dog again.
Sorry I have rambled as usual, but i just wanted you to know that I fully understand how it knocks you down. Hopefully though this will turn out to be something simple and you can all move forward and put this behind you.
I certainly havve everything crossed for you.
If you ever want a lovely very big crate, I have one here you can borrow should you want one. Its at least 4' long and I know Shady had plenty of room to sprawl out in it and could stand up with plenty of spare head room. Also if you need a ramp for the car, I have a very good quality one here that is not too steep and non slip I bought for Shady that you are more than welcome to borrow too.

You poor soul - this is a nightmare at the moment, but hopefully all will be well in the end. Yes, Dillon is very young, but my friend's Bernese was also young.......(older than yours I admit, but still a baby).....and she is now absolutely fine after her op.

You don't deserve this worry, and I really hope that once this is over Dillion is trouble free. A big cuddle for you.

Thank you Bev. I know you have been through so much heartache too. I said to Gorden it wasn't meant to be like this he said to me listen if a dog needs looking after and needs a possible operation then its best it is our home it comes too. We have been offered a crate from his breeder but if we do need one yours might be nearer for picking up. We do have a ramp funnily enough I replaced the one that broke when Ollie was taken ill. I do not have have that awful feeling in my gut this time like I have had both times before so hopefully it is something very simple.

Thank you. I am more positive this time around I know he comes from good stock both sides his breeder is well respected so is his Sires breeder. I know if he needs an op for the cruciate he is young and has that on his side but I am also not giving up on the fact it might be a very bad sprain, pulled muscle or pulled ligament and rest and anti flams will do the trick. If it is the worst well who knows but as of yet I am not focusing on things being that bad.
