I know tom, its very worrying that some people think every leggy staff is a pitbull
Ive had it with my own dogs, they are plainly obviously NOT pitbulls, but some people need a bit of convincing.
In general if your unsure, two things tend to differentiate the pit from a staffie, the ears - usually in a pitbull they are larger and more triangular "drop" ears compared with staffs, and also the face, it is usually more chiseled with a longer muzzle, but this isnt always an indicator as you get some pits with very staffie looking faces and ears and vice versa

I dont think its Emma really trying to be bitchy CBT, I think its just that Jess sometimes forgets to engage her brain before she types (we're all guilty of that at times). I can see why people can get irate though because some questions she puts forward are very leading and some statements very ridiculous......

to be honest I find it appalling that any particular breed can be banned and as the owner of a staffie it doesnt bother me how people refer to them - ie: staffordshire pitbull or anything else - at the end of the day its educating people that any dog has the capacity to do harm no matter what the breed as its the person that owns them that influences them the most - not its genes.

On saying that, the reason that pitbull, staffs and other bull breeds are picked on is the fact that due to the jaws they have they are powerful enough that they do a lot of damage in a little time if the situation arises.

I dont know if any of you watch Animal Cops detriot on animal planet - but its heartbreaking as whenever they rescue a pitbull type breed they put it to sleep, not even bothering to temperament test or socialise it, whilst I realise that there resources are limited - if it was a lab or a spaniel they would always give it a chance and that is what EVERY dog deserves.

I feel very strongly on this as my staffie isnt good with other dogs and is aggressive but not when he is curled up like a cat on my lap at night !! So no I think its shocking that breeds are picked out for banning as its the education thats missing here not the legislation .......

i think jess has learned her lesson and apologised for any misunderstandings that have occured due to her previous posts, time to wipe the slate clean i think
i find some of her ideas interesting i must admit, especially the ones about raw feeding and "natural dogmanship" (im a big fan of natural horsemanship so ive nicked the name from that ) and i dont think she deliberately intends to offend, she just has a different way of looking at things, and putting them across, I can relate to that cos im a bit like that myself

In answer to Tom's post, a large part of the reason why Pit Bulls were demonised so easily is due to the fact that they are not KC reg. and therefore do not have the air of respectability afforded to the Stafford or any other KC breed for that matter, also the considerable numerical power allied to KC membership, makes people think twice before invoking the wrath of so many dog owners.

however, since it was enthusiasts of the breeds sporting ability who introduced pitbulls to the UK, the breed was never likely to have been accepted by the KC, if it had been show people, and they had imported show bred amstaffs, things might have panned out slightly differently, who knows?
The pitbull was never meant to be a show dog so the chances of him being accepted for KC reg in this country would always have been slim even before the DDA

I strongly believe that all dog owners no matter what your breed should stick together because you dont know which breed will be next, as a child I remember a story in the paper about two Rotties who got out of their garden and killed a young child the paper went on to say that all these dogs were dangerous evil creatures and I have to admit that I believed it I didnt know any better, when I came over to England and worked in a pub I got to find out what a wonderful breed they really are every one I have met since have been wonderful, the general public dont know any better and it is our job as dog owners to show them that there are no bad dogs only bad owners.
