Loads - far too much, I suspect (I'm slightly obsessive that way) And I'm still researching in preparation for future bundles of fun The more research I do, the more breeds I fall in love with

Sadly, some of my prefered breeds have been ruled out for "non-doggy" reasons - one breed on my shortlist I would never home until I was confident of finding a breeder who was responsible etc - in some breeds, breeders still refuse to acknoweldge that there are inherited health or temperment problems

My search continues.....

I always wanted my chosen breed but timing was never right, when it was we did around a year trawling shows, talking to people/reading/searching and we got Miss Dolly. But i do think the learning only starts when you own one as unfortunately they didn't read the same breed books as we did

We have decided that our next dog will be a bullmastiff and have been researching the breed for nearly 3 years. We were hoping to find one this year but life being as it is has put some obstacles in the way so we're waiting till we're sorted again!!

Quite a lot-even went to a Rottie show to speak to owners.A vet is also a good person to ask as their view will be without any prejeduce or favours.

I did loads of research before deciding to buy Spike, it took some convincing that they were considerably more robust dogs after being around Pedigree Bulldogs for such a long time.
I wouldnt be without him now, or his daughter And I think I will own his breed for a long time, probably for the rest of my life.

To be really honest not alot, all I remember was that me and Ian had spoken about getting another dog.
We wasn't sure what breed of dog we was going to get, then pure coincidence... we clicked onto Dogpages to have alook to see what was around for rescue.
And thats when we came across Chester, within 2/3 weeks we were on our way home with our first American Bulldog.
I thought that they wouldn't be much different from our old Bullmastiff, how wrong was we... and still the fun continues. These 2 dogs are totally different from each other and we have still alot to learn.
But I wouldn't be without an AB now, I have found the dog that is my chosen breed.

Must admit nothing much at all. My ex partners parents had 3 which they showed and bred, so basically I got to no the breed through them. I knew they were fantastic with kids so that was good enough for me. I'd had quite a few dogs in the past so I knew I could manage. That was 5 yrs ago and I've never once thought I'd made the wrong choice.
I've learnt loads since having them though and I could never see myself with another breed.

Did allmost the same. Talked to my vet.
Went to diff clubs to see varios dogs and how they worked.
Called and visited breeders and trainers. Read on the internet, magazines and books.

All that I felt would help me make the right choice which I truely feel I have.
I think it prepared me to deal with my dog better than if I had done no research or if I first had to get the info after getting my dog.

hmm, interesting post...
My partner and I are thinking of getting 2 dogs in a couple of years time and have already started our research. OH is set on a Boerboel and researching them and I cannot decide my breed - so researching the ones I fancy to aid a decision! I am thinking of a Staff, EBT, Standard American Bulldog or Ridgeback... as I like the look of them all and they all have short hair - which is a must really and the easier they are to socialise with other dogs, the better... which is difficult when I want a bullbreed I am also considering adopting a bull breed rescue thats dog friendly...
