Hi,

Thanks for the responses, I don't mean lie about the purchase price as I spoke to someone on the phone from an insurance company today and he said it is fine to change that as it just means if you do not want to get the full £1000 back should the dog die and you are not bothered about the money then you can lower the purchase price to what you are happy with as its only a high premium as they are adding to it for covering what they might have to give back to you.

I know puppies are not cheaper to insure but what I meant was that if it is starting out with premiums of £30 then its will only get higher so it is a high amount to start with knowing you have the rest of the dogs life left to deal with increasing premiums.

I am getting full for life cover, so recurring conditions are covered as I do not want to ever be caught short

I looked at Tesco but I ruled them out for some reason as they are not on my list any more, I cant remember why though.

I will have to try calling a few other insurance companies and see what they say about changing the purchase price, I am sure if I get it in writing or record the conversation (with permission)where they agreed to it then that would be fine if I have been told it is OK to do so...

I was thinking about the free insurance with my pup but decided against it. Think about it, if in the worst case you pup has a serious chronic disease which the breeder didn't tell you about or didn't know about, you take her to the vets and then for the rest of her life you'll have to pay out for it as it will be excluded from the insurance. It is also only their most basic tier of insurance so if she had a bad accident it would not cover much.

I'm on Pet Plan's highest tier which at about £33 per month is expensive but I think it's worth it for the piece of mind as it cover up to 12 grand a year which I could NO WAY afford if the worst happened. Plus, I think Dobermans are a bit more expesive to insure.

I haven't read all the posts on this thread, but do have a bit of advice no matter what insurance you take... Make sure you have a vets appointment the very day you pick up the puppy! Have a complete puppy-check done! That way you firstly are sure your puppy is ok, and secondly if he's not you can fall back on the breeder, and thirdly if all is fine, you have clean bill of health for your insurance! Many innsurances (here in hollans) actually pay for this visit even if you're not yet insured

My little one is insured with Petplan the first year I paid £139.00, during that year I had to make a claim for over £700.00 treatment for an accident on her leg, I have just received the renewal for this year, to my surprise it was still only £139.00.

All my pups go with free 4 weeks insurance from Petplan and I'm sorry you have no choice if you buy a pup of me. This is to cover me if you drop it on the way out, have an accident on the way home or its gets savaged on its first walk !!!!!!

Last summer, one of my pups went off to their new home and picked up canine hepatitis during the first 4 weeks, he was a really poorly pup and had seen many vets and specialists. Sadly he passed away but the free Petplan insurance I gave them covered the full cost of all treatment including the cost of pup, so a free insurance they were able to re-claim over £4000!!

You also don't get a choice with me, all my pups have free 4 weeks insurance from the minute they leave my house. I activate it the day they leave.

When the pup died, Petplan asked for copies of the receipts for the pup, so I don't think you would be able to tell them a different price.

My pups leave with a contract stating they have been checked by my own vet (I give new owners my vets name and telephone number) and tell them they have 3 days to get them checked by their own vet, should their vet find anything different from my vet, I ask them to ring and talk and if they think the pup unfit for sale then to bring pup back and full refund will be given.
