Yikes!!
It kind of swings both ways though. I agree that vets should be pushing health testing (if applicable for the breed) on people who are looking to breed their dogs, but equally the would-be breeders need to do their research properly. All it takes is a quick Google search or a read of a book to confirm what the common health problems in a breed are, and whether there are tests available for them. So the vet not telling them isn't really a valid excuse.

So much to learn!!It's interesting though.

I'll see what my vet says next week, I need to check the diet thing too as am sure he doesn't need to be on sensitive, just hypo and adult not puppy will do I'm sure.

thanks for all the advice though, you guys rock!

She matched Cosmo to us because of his temperament and I have to say she did a really good job. He'll never win a show or do a days work...but he's a cracking pet. If I ever get another pup (which we're not sure we ever will at this stage) then I would trust her to do it again. The breeders know the pups inside out and so it makes sense for them to choose who suits who...
We chose Biff because my OH said 'look he likes me' as he was being pushy (thus the name the owner of the mum had given him...) NEVER again!!!

I have a friend who does that.. the only choice she gives her puppy buyers is what sex they want.

She hand picks each pup for each buyer.

She assesses the buyer, their lifestyle, first time dog owners and so one.. and places a puppy to them...after all she says she is the one who has seen the temperament develop, and what family they will fit into.

For example, the quiet one wil go to a family , the most adventurous will go to the person who wants to work their dog..

I wish someone had done that for us. Also wish we'd stumbled across something ''other'' than telling us to go for most lively, most alert!!
