4 hrs is not too bad, I would be worried if he was nibbling them.. did you say there was a dressing on it? so I take it he has taken it off?

I have 4 rotties at the moment, but Im a breeder.. none of my dogs have ever needed the surgery, I have been very lucky so far..

ETA: what age is he? what breeder did you get him from, they may be able to offer good advice..

Anne-Marie on the forum has had a rottie that had surgery done, she will be able to offer good advice. I will pm her the link. Im sure she can be more helpful than me
I had a rottie that had surgery after a bad glass cut, but she never touched the stiches, so every dog is diff, some will go at it all day others wont,

Hiya - Shona PM'd me, I'd hadn't spotted this question!

My previous Rottie, Ozzy had to have a cruciate op. He was a young boy too about 2yrs when he had it. He was a very bouncy boy and it I understand how difficult it is to keep them quiet and settled.

I kept his Elizabethan Collar on all the time, as without it he would immediately try and chew the stitches. If he gets the cone off, there is another type of collar you can get that stops them biting at themselves, it looks rather like a huge ordinary dog-collar, but it is stiff and doesn't allow them to bend their necks, so stops them nibbling Worth asking your vet?

I read that you didn't have a crate, I would highly recommend buying one. I found his crate absolutely invaluable and am sure it helped his recovery process. Without it I am certain he'd have been too active and damaged the leg. If you don't like the idea of a crate, I would restrict his access to just one room and not have freedom of your ground floor.

I kept him occupied with frozen stuffed Kongs, packed with lots of yummy treats that he had to chew on forever to get them out I also used to give him different chew toys. He was a huge TV watcher too, so I would put Animal Planet on for him before we left him alone just to stave boredom off.

Our vet told us that it was paramount Ozzy had total bedrest, he stressed that if he were to get over-excited and try and run or jump he could not only undo the surgery, but it would be likely that he would be permanently lame. This is why we crated him for quite a number of weeks. We only let him outside to relieve himself on an extendable lead and then brought him in again.

After those weeks of rest, the vet told us we could take him for tiny walks ie: just a few feet on lead. Again he said to take it very slowly as his muscles would have deteriorated with all the resting. We then slowly week by week extended the walks further until he was putting full weight on it. It was a slow healing process and TBH I never thought he would have had full use of his leg, but there is a video on here somewhere of him running around like a loon only a few months after the op (will try and find it for you)!!

If you want to read about it here are my posts....

If you want to read all my posts about his op and recovery, if you click on my name at the bottom of the page where it lists all the members, you can then click on "find all threads started by" me. Look on the last page first and you will see posts all about him.

I've edited again to post a photo and the vid of him, it really is amazing to see the difference!!!

Sad face, he couldn't put any weight on the leg at all for ages.

and the video I never thought I would make, him running once again.

I do hope this info helps you and good luck with your dogs recovery xxxx

Hi (thanks for the pm shona)

We had this surgery back on new years eve.

The tplo op went well, but i have (and am still having problems with her scar healing). But don't let that worry you to much as i seem to be rare. All my friends dogs have healed really well.

Again if you click on my name (shiba) and look at all my previous threads i've started you can check out what we have been through. Beware its loads and i will stress again don't panic as we are rare. My specialist has never ever come across another dog like mine.

Anyway the surgery has gone brilliantly and she belts around the woods at full speed now with no limp what so ever. So thats good.

Her wound (from the surgery) kept opening though. We have tried everything we can think of to stop this. It happens because she won't leave it alone and it swells and splits the stitches or staples. We've gone through at least 10 elizabethan collars, neck braces and things you inflate. She broke or mastered them all.

The one thing that i have just found a week or so ago, is manuka honey (check out my threads) its fantastic for applying neat onto a wound. Excellent healing properties. (check with your vet first though). Maybe do an internet search for it.

Also i bought a wax stick thing thats got a bitter taste, its got aloe vera gel, whichhazel etc and tastes horrible and i put this all over and around her scar. She will still lick but it is obvious she doesn't like the taste and tends to leave it alone more. Wish i had used this back in january but i never new it existed.

I bought this at pets at home. Apparently there is something else thats got a bitter apple taste that you can buy also but i haven't found that one yet. Worth ago because you really want him to leave it alone.

Please pm me anytime as i have been dealing with this all year and i will try and do my best to answer any questions you have. Good luck.
