I presume the redness comes during the 'total' eclipse once the bright white is hidden.

The redness is due to the blue component of the sun's rays being scattered in the upper atmosphere of the earth leaving the longer wavelengths (reds and oranges) to be refracted onto the moon's surface.

Apparently, its been nearly 2.5 years since there last was a total lunar eclipse (October 27th, 2004).

The next one is on August 28th 2007, but won't be visible from Europe:
