i have a three legged staffy and we regularly file down her nails as they dont wear down as much as her back legs due to her hopping around, so we file her front leg to reduce any discomfort to her foot.

I file down Freya`a nails... she`s like a velociraptor, when she bats you with her blinkin great feet. The nails are too short to clip... but are still sharp.. so i bought the 'mikki' nail file... works a treat.

I might give that a try actually. I bought a Dremel some years ago, but the noise it makes does not endear it to my critters, and I'm too chicken to cut the nails myself, especially Roxy's as they are black.

Just a bit of advice, if you are thinking about clipping them yourself, make sure you buy some of that powder (thornit???) to stop any bleeding, coz I forgot that bit when I last cut Georgie's nails, and had to bandage one of them all night and put a sock on his paw, just couldn't stop the bleeding - he was not impressed with me, so he now goes to the vet with Cassie for a manicure
