I would suggest a puppy training class, there are also many good books out there. One of the most important lessons you'll ever teach your dog...if I'm not with you, you do not go. I have a limp, if I stumble at all Callie stops instantly and comes back to me. He's an AmBull so he could drag me to the next state quite easily. But someone trained him really well before he found us.
