Thanks for your reply. We have stopped him from eating his own (but it means we can't let him out in the yard to play unless we are right there). We also stopped the kiity litter box (he just got that once). Sadly, I think you are probably right - the only hope is to be vigilant and that might not even work. We are going to do our best, because even it is normal, it is hard to think of having a dog who eats poop all his life.
