I rent and I’m allowed 2 dogs, most dog friendly landlords would let you have 2 max anyway, if you can provide a reference from a previous landlord- who allowed dog/s in their property, that can help.

Then again, how big is the property you are going to rent?

The pound, who had a signed waiver from the adopter, simply shrugged "Bring it back and we'll put it down."

Tears all round despite the adopters efforts and best intentions.

It can work. It often works but why take the chance? To what advantage?
Okay, point taken I'll maybe go through a rescue that takes on pound dogs then.

That's good to know, thank you! Up until now I've lived at home so no references from previous landlords, sadly. However, I'm hoping that the dog sitter who looks after her could attest to her good behaviour within the house and perhaps the lady from the training class we attended could give us a reference too.

Unfortunately the places I'm looking at are all very small as I can't afford more than a one bedroomed or studio flat at the minute.

Good luck with wat you decide to do.

I think the most you will be allowed is 2

Thank you Yeah, it seems that the general consensus is two, which works well for me as I don't think I could handle more than two!

My Alfie is a poundy and the rescue picked him up from there 2 hours before I collected him. But, he had been there 6 weeks and he was only 12 weeks old. There was a history on him.

Like John said, some absolutely tragic things have happened with unassessed poundies. Not the dogs fault, but one of the main things a rescue does, is assess the dogs and find out if they have any major issues.

Find a rescue that takes poundies, many of them do. Well done you for wanting to save a dog in need.

Aw bless Alfie, so lovely that he could be saved and rehomed with you

I think perhaps I will go through a rescue that takes on poundies then as I wouldn't want to put Molly in any danger. I'd feel awful if anything happened to her because of me

I rent with 3 dogs

Initially I was ringing up about houses and as soon as I mentioned the dogs they said NO
Then my friend who also rents with dogs told me not to mention the dogs on the initial phone call, arrange to see the house, meet the people who own the house, let them see your a responsible adult etc etc etc then drop in about the dogs!!

Worked for me

Good Luck

You could do with getting yourself signed up to one of the rescue forums, dont think i'd be able to post names on here as they are forum based. Rescues are always advertising dogs needing homes that have previously been in the pound.

Like people have said, it's possible to get a dog directly from death row but there will be no back up and very little assessment carried out. I know of some very dedicated people who try to assess poundies in the pound because some rescues are particular about the kind of dogs they take on, fosterers need to know etc but it will be quite basic and may not unearth potential problems, both physical and behavioural.

At the end of the day, a pound is just a holding place until they are either claimed, rescued or PTS and their aim isnt to assess dogs generally.

Haha thank you! So far I've been calling up and starting off with 'Do you have any houses for rent that allow dogs?' To which I have been getting a resounding 'No!'

I shall try your technique, fingers crossed it works as well for me as it has done for you!

Thank you! I think perhaps the pound idea was a little foolish. It'll only be my 2nd dog so I wouldn't want to end up taking off more than I can handle and having to rehome the dog or even worse putting my current dog in danger. I'll definitely be going through a rescue to find a suitable dog
