Many people dont bother to pay attention to where their dogs are or what they're doing and just walk along in their own little world. It annoys me when people are walking their dogs together, are engrossed in conversation about the price of eggs or whatever and let their dogs do what they like.

My Mum has a friend who owns a beagle and is always complaining it runs off. This lady then doesnt talk to her dog for several days afterwards as a form of punishment (!) Anyway, i've seen this lady walking her beagle and no wonder it runs off...It's owner is so boring, too busy chatting to her friends on the park, that it decides to make it's own entertainment elsewhere.

I always know where my dogs are and if I cant see one then I whistle for it to come back into sight because you never know what could be round the corner.

You will come across many more arrogant, ignorant, clueless owners but just take it all in your stride and dont let them offend you. You were the responsible one and my attitude is if the other owner doesnt care, then neither do I and at that point my manners go out the window and let them take the consequences.

Ignore them.
Thankfully I haven't come across ignorant people or rude people yet. But it happens and it will happen, and I'll take it all in my stride then. As you should do

Ignorance isn't always bliss for those who choose to stand on the wrong side of it

My dog Ted is now a year old. I consider myself very lucky in that since only about 3mths old when in the park he walks off lead and never goes far from my side. In fact it makes me laugh as if he goes in front of me too far he always turns and makes sure I'm there. Anyway, when he was approx 6 mths he was attacked by a Greyhound that came flying at him, from a distance away, picked him up, shook him, then ran off with him in his jaws! Horror- you can just imagine, I thought my sweet non aggressive pooch was a gonna. The screams he gave will stay with me forever. Luckily the owner ran over and struck the dog with his lead until he released it. Ted, as you can imagine, was in shock, shaking and wimpering. The guy was very apologetic and said it waxa rescue dog he had only had for 5weeks??!! And in future he would muzzle it and would never let it off lead again( horse and stable door comes to mind!) I wax lucky ad the vet said Ted just had a couple of puncture wounds and a very bruised back £87 later after anti inflammatory and anti-biotics he recovered, but he was nervous near large dogs for sometime. All thankfully I got to know at the park have all said he should never had let the dog run free without a muzzle as those types are bred to chase and I think he thought Ted was a rabbit when it was running about. ( Ted is a cross King Charles Cav/ Bichon , so very fluffy)
The long winded point I'm trying to make here is- shouldn't a dog that is unpredictable be muzzled when out and about? I do appreciate the person that replied saying she wants it to be able to protect itself, so I understand the next resonsible thing is to do as they did and have it on lead. Ted never approaches other dogs, he stands stock still when he sees one approaching him with one little paw held up, as if trying to assess if it will attack him, it's heartbreaking. Once he knows the other dog is no threat Ted loves to play. He has never once growled or neared his teeth at another dog.
Oh how I wish other dogs were all like him and all my walks would be pleasant. I'm still a nervous wreck if I'm honest, but resist picking Ted up when I see another ( usually large) dog coming towards us, as I know this would just make him worse. Stupidly, I know, but, if I see a Greyhound now I totally freak!
Sorry this post is so long, it's the first time I've ever put this down in writing and it's made me feels that much better for it.

You definately are not stupid for feeling with that way. I had the misfortune of watching a poor Toy Poodle (who thankfully did survive) get attacked by a Greyhound. I actually do pick up my Yorkie if I see any sighthound type or any dog I get bad vibe from running loose; I'm not risking it.

Sorry to hear of your experience with inconsiderate owners. We have this happen all the time with Cherry when other owners allow their dogs to charge up at her and she is on a lead because of fear aggression and poor-sight. She is much improved re fear aggression but still "freaks out" if another dog charges at her like this as she has been attacked before and can't read other dog's body language.

Sadly it is just something you have to get used to in today's society-no-one is able to take personal responsibility it seems-it is always the other person's fault!

I hate when people have that attitude... Its the aggressive dogs offlead that drive me nuts! At least you are being responsible by keeping him away from other dogs (at least until you know what they are like).

Sorry to hear about that Gee I can understand you freaking out when you see a Greyhound around now I can't understand why someone would have their rescue (possibly an ex-racer) off lead and unmuzzled only 5 weeks after getting them!?!
