can I ask does the coat loose all its waterproofing and so on?

Yes and mud jumped out of the puddles onto it and then stuck like glue!

My current ESS seems to be very sleek and to have escaped the fuzz so far, but perhaps I'm just more diligent at stripping it out.

At the grooming parlour I worked at in Norfolk, the lady used to strip most of the spaniels - the ones who had not been stripped as younger dogs had to be clipped as the coat was too far gone, but the ones that had been 'kept on top of' seemed to have nice coats

It was particularly grim with a dog that sought out muddy puddles and wallowed every day. So a couple of times I resorted to this...

Which is why I spend so much time stripping Dusty and so far it seems to be working.

Exactly!! I inherited Ossie when he was about 6 years old and if I had stripped his coat he would have been bald.

Awe bless, I guess if the coat is really bad, then you really have to take drastic action

I wouldn't say it was awful?!?!?!? You can see it on his sides and on his knees in particular in this shot.

Have you ever stripped his coat? A coat King may help as well.
No, how do I do it? The grooming he gets is with a slicker brush, every day.
