Congratulations, to be honest, I would love to be able to accomodate like your breeder is doing, but there is no way I could give the pup to you after 6 months of being my baby lol its gotta be really hard on the breeder?

Im probably going to be shot down in flames here, but Im not sure that I think thats this a good idea. For several reasons. If you are going to have the summer off then go back to work part time, why not get a pup next July? That way you will have all the bonding and training time together, and although pups are very hard work, they get attached to you and look to you for leadership and comfort from day one.

Im also questioning the breeders motives a little, although on the surface it might seem like a good idea, Im questioning the motivation a little, who is going to pay for the food for 'your' pup, any vets bills, the vaccinations etc. She is going to put in the hard work in house training, socialisation, walking, training, dealing with the sleepless nights etc, just to hand them over to you? What about things like if there is an accident, who would pay for that? Or if the breeder got so attached (after all I would hope that they would be treating the dog just like their own) that they couldnt give them up?

Sorry I dont mean to be so cynical, Ive just never heard of this set up before with breeders and prospective owners?

Well Janice I may be shot down as well because I agree with you. Why would a breeder be willing to keep a pup for 6 months? Not the norm is it? If I was getting a pup I would want that pup at home with me to bond with me not the breeder. One question I would want to know is the breeder going to keep the dog with the family or in kennels? Is the breeder going do all the socialization and training that a pup needs? Why doesn't the OP just wait?

I would say I too would wait until I was able to have the pup straight away.
Do you pay the full price at the start, ie is the pup legally yours from the start? If so are you paying for all it's food etc? If not doesn't that mean the breeder can sell it on at any point? Not that I'm saying they'll do that it does just seem odd.
Can you imagine if there was more than one pup from a litter being kept like this, oh the fun trying to get a bunch of littermates bonding with anyone other than themselves.
If you are happy with a 6 month old pup why not rescue?
I have to say it is an odd arrangement and I don't want to sound a party pooper but by having a pup from a pup, if that's what you want, is all the fun!
You can visit as much as you want but it won't be bonding with you to start with..... and surely YOUR home and evnvironment is the best to socialise it from the start, if that's what it's going to be used to.

Becks, also wearing a fireproof jacket, just in case lol

Im with you lot on this one guys, As a breeder I find it a tad strange, but that said I would run a pup on for someone if I new them well and was good friends with them, that aside though I dont see me offering this service, its not fair to the dog or the new owner really,

as others have said, poss the best idea would be to get a pup when your lifestyle fits it,

I would rather rear my own pup as have someone else do it for me, who knows what sort of pup you will be handed.

Its up to the OP & the breeder isnt it. If "we" wouldnt personally do it thats no reason to critise others. Im sure the OP & Breeder have thought long & hard on the pros & cons before coming to this descision
