to the other Emma, he'd been treated for worms and fleas when we got him so he's completely treated for all of those things. He's drinking well and is perky even though he's had runny poops. he's definately well hydrated we did the skin check. It could be because of all the moving about with the new home and the car journey to get to home. he did steal his tub of food and scoffed the lot the other day then the runs started again, that could be the reason for the runs again he could have over done his stomach with all the food.

Hi Emmas, and if that is your dog as your avatar then he is gorgeous!

As others have said, give the rice diet a chance to work, along with either bland fish or chicken. The fact that the sanctuary gave him all the treatments necessary before you picked him up, and also that he is perky and happy apart from the runny poops, does suggest that it might be stress related. In which case, it will settle down before too long.

I think that you are wise to take him to the Vet as soon as you possibly can though, just to make sure that he is healthy.

congrats on your new dog.

my rescue had the same problem, he had blood tests which showed he had gastroenteritis, 2 weeks of antibiotics and a change to raw feeding made him a new dog.

its scary at your stage, you may even regret your decision to adopt, i know i did. but then it all changes overnight and you are left with a bundle of love.

see if you vet will let you pay in instalments, you wont be covered on insurance if the dog was treated for the same condition by the rescue vet. it might also be worth a call to that vet see what tests were done so you dont pay for the same ones, my dog had a series of blood tests, each one taken separately at extra costs.

stick it out, its worth it

hi girls, Bitkin Rufus looks like the avatar bar the ring on his eye he's two coloured ears when he's better Rufus will be my avatar cos he's a cutie. I know I've been worried about his health but he's been perky and his tail never stops wagging, and he never stops jumping and bouncing about. I was worried cos of the fact he's a rescue dog with temperament and if he'd a bad life before until I saw his picture and met him in person so to speak. He's defo worth all the hard work and the trouble. If I didn't get him I would have missed out on a great wee dog. I did worry the first day and a half then when he licked the face of me the worry went away. He's a wee slobber chops!

I have a feeling that you and Rufus will get along just fine.........he has found someone who loves him already even though it is early days, and he is clearly eager to give you everything that he has. I think that it is a very lucky person who does not encounter teething problems when taking home a rescue dog, but with an attitude like yours you will sail through the early difficulties.

People on here have been a great help and comfort to me over the past few weeks, and I know that you will find them the same. Just ask!

Hopefully it settles down and the vet can help if it doesn't by the time you take him, good luck and let us know how you get on if you have time xx

I would actually not feed him for 24 hours & make sure that all the water you give him is cooled boiled water with a tablespoon of glucose(sugar if you haven't got any glucose)& a pinch of salt(& I do mean a pinch of salt) per pint/500 mls.

Then start him on the rice & fish-top tip is to cook the fish in water & use the water from the fish to cook the rice until it is sticky(like "indian"rice)then mix the two together & feed in small amounts(starting with a tablespoonful every hour or so & slowly increasing)when he has been clear of the diarrhoea for at least 48 hours. You could also try a scrambled egg-no milk just the whole egg scarmbled on it's own on the second day of the rice as an egg is a complete food on it's own.

Then reintroduce his normal food 10 % per day(as you would if you were changing the diet)I would keep all his water boiled with the added glucose & salt until he is back onto his normal food fully, then drop the glucose & salt, but keep the water boiled for at least a month.

I know it sounds strange, but simply the stress of the move & the change in water can cause diarrhoea. I would also start to give him natural live yoghurt(a tablespoonful a day)when he is back to normal food.

thanx girls, I will definately keep you up to speed with rufus. Bitkin thanx for that he's a really good wee dog and both myself and my partner Darron love him to bits already. we're takin him to the vets on friday and the dog sanctuary gave us the vets booklet with all of the treatments rufus has received so I'm hoping that helps rufus out.

You need to see a vet! BUT! I am not a fan of the dry foods they seem to want to ply! I had sever problems with one of my girls! I ended up being referred to european soft tissue specialist (the best imo) We put her onto Nature diet and althought we never cured her she did have a better quality of life for her few remaining months.
