Live in aberdeenshire, been in scotland 38 years, I am originally from hampshire,I do understand a lot of scots, but sometimes its foreign to me...

I think with Doric you have to grow up with it; especially since it is really just a dialect. When I moved to Edinburgh I found I was translating as I spoke and what to me made perfect sense meant nothing to other people and then there were the words where there was no equivalent. To this day (10 years since I left the NE) I still confuse people
