"He also says.. that only this breed (bull breed in general) can kill someone"

"He also says other dogs like collies cant be trained to attack since they r retrievers"

Those two statements are amongst the stupidest things I've EVER heard. For starters collies aren't retrievers, they are herders! And they excell in sports where they are required to bite a decoy, in fact some clubs have started to only allow GSD's to stop the Border Collies from taking over!

The comment about Bull breeds being the only ones that could kill a person is ridiculous, beyond ridiculous, f****** absurd. Just think about the types of dogs the army uses, GSD's and Malinois mainly.

More people are bitten by spaniels than Bull breeds.

"He is set on fact that they are bred to attack/hunt, so wud attack people"

Staffs/Pits were originally bred to fight OTHER DOGS, but not people. They have never been bred (by reputable breeders) to be people-aggressive. One of the reasons they are so good with children is because they have such a high pain tolerance and can deal with kids pulling ears etc. When I was little (about 3) I used to use our old English Bull Terriers as stools; if I couldn't reach something I'd stand on the dogs whilst they were lying down, they never bothered. One of my cousins got into lots of trouble with my parents for sitting on the dog's back and yanking his ears as hard as he could, made the dog cry but he didn't even try to get up which would've caused my cousin to fall on the floor. PEOPLE AGGRESSION HAS NEVER BEEN A DESIRABLE TRAIT even when dog fighting was still practiced- they couldn't have a dog that 'went for' people instead of dogs, it would have been too dangerous to fight them.

I can quite understand your anger, if he was my father I'd disown him. The trouble is that when people make their minds up based on fictional stories and media hype they will rarely, if ever, admit that they were wrong. My brother's girlfriend is pretty damned stupid when it comes to dogs as well, but she's not just worried about Bullbreeds, she dislikes all dogs larger than a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.....

well, my dad used to have a king charles spaniel, and he said that you cannot train one to attack since its not bred into them!! Whereas since its bred into bull breeds, then u can.
His main point is, that since any dog could just bite one day without warning, he said nobody should be allowed to own a bull breed, cos if they did decide to bite, then they would cause serious damage, whereas something like a labrador, could not cause as much, so is not such a threat!

but its so stupid, Indie is lovely, and has never shown any agression to anything. And hed still rather trust a biting collie than her!
But it annoys me so much how he fills my families heads with cr*p about it, and i cant take her anywhere anymore. perhaps i should tell them that if they wanna see me, then they have to come here. Since i cant take indie there. perhaps they shud make the effort rather than me leave her at home.

They have a lovely house in the countryside, with a massive field in their garden for horses. but he still said, that she cudnt go there, incase she got one of their cats.. or even if they didnt have cats.. for the safety of neighbours cats and dogs!!!!
how stupid.
And jus cos i said i wudnt take her off the lead when out, jus incase of other dogs.. he said she was vicious cos of that, and said its ridiculous that anyone should be able to own such a breed that cud be dangerous to other dogs off lead... or even people so he thinks.
GRRRRRRRR

oh andhave a look at this site.. its amazing how so many peope are afraidof pitbulls, but dont know what one looks like!

Hi just a general comment the worse bite I ever had was from a Border Collie who rushed out and grabbed my ankle, my sister was bitten by a Scottie. IMO there is no such thing as a vicious breed..some dogs in all breeds have problems usually not there fault.

CL..can't think of a program where I've seen a nice staffy,
I have there is an ad on BBC One I think..for breakfast radio?Phil Jupitus has a very soft staffie..think it climbes into his chair, was not really watching but feel sure it was a staffie...anyway had I been a 'non dog person' I would have got the impression ''I am a happy soft dog who likes to be with you''

How old is Indie now? Just make sure you socialise the heck out of her, make sure she's fine with children, cats, dogs......... and prove people wrong by having a perfectly lovely staffie!

Take care,

Lizzy.

Indie is coming up to 4 months now. but is 18 weeks old.

We have a 3 yr old living with us who she loves to pieces and also a yorkshire terrier living here, who she also loves. I trust her more than him.

At puppy training, she was so well behaved, whereas some of the dogs were agressive. She jus wagged her tail and wanted to play. Thats what shes like.. always wanst to play. and we have had a few occassions where another dog (sadly on all occassions staffies) have gone for her, and she still wagged her tail. She loves my niece to bits too. But doesnt get to see her often.

I always try to take her on walks where she will meet other dogs, and am constantly socialising her with new people.
these puppy training classes should help also as there are a fair few dogs in our class

The trouble with meeting other dogs whilst out walking is that a lot of dogs get quite vocal when they are on a lead, which often gives the wrong impression. My Aunt has always had Staffs and they would make a terrible noise when another dog approached, but off the lead they were fantastic and would play with anything that moved!!! Obviously it's not practical to let a pup off lead, or let dogs belt up to other dogs who aren't loose, but the puppy classes should be great for her; they do allow the pups to play together off leads at the end of classes don't they?

It's awful that your dad is so worried about a puppy, has he ever been bitten? Sad though it is, it's probably better that you don't take her to his house if he's really anti; she could end up having a bad experience there.

Also, some dogs ('specially pups) may growl if they are frightened, it doesn't necessarily mean they are aggressive or unreliable with other dogs.

Good luck with her!!

i dont think hes ever been bitten, he jus very inti bull breeds and guarding breeds like rotties and dobermans.

indie has never been bitten by a staff, even though one of them that was off the lead ran up to her growling and barking, but i dont think she bit her. The owner did come over bvery quick. but ur right, staffies do make a terrible noise that sounds very vicious, when its not. They are jus excited.

I just hope he will come to his senses. Afterall, indie is still a puppy, and there is no threat from her, especially at such a young age. Yet he wont trust her with kids even now
