Think the Nexus is coming in at around 199 so may be too pricey?

Thanks all. Will pass those on. My feelings are the Ipod touch will be too small.

I know what you mean but they really are powerful little gadgets and their size makes them
easy for kids to transport from a to b, they are very popular amongst youngsters for that reason, much more so than an ipad

They are powerful and do most things that a tablet would, certainly for the needs of a 7 year old! My son got his a couple of years ago and it is still going strong. When they all come here they all have them and sit and compare games etc watch youtube, all the stuff they can do
On a tablet, but they wouldn't bring a tablet round after school as they wouldn't be able to take it to school in ther pockets. The portability of an ipod shouldn't be ignored for the child market. A lot of kids his age ( now 12) prefer them to the ipads and tablets as they can throw them in their pockets.
Indeed, the younger kids who got tablets/ipads seem to have got them so their parents can use them too

Kindle fire does look good too, I've been looking at that for my mum. She was given an ipod by a friend and uses it a lot but for her elderly fingers and sight a tablet would be better, especially as she loves her kindle. It doesn't seem to have a 3G capability though or am I being thick?! There is also the much talked about
Mini ipad due for launch ( allegedly) which will be closer to that price bracket than the ipad.
A friend swears by the Nexus but it is a little more than the £150.
Whatever this little one gets I am sure they will love it!

Thanks all. I did see the smaller memory Nexus for £159 via Google shop.

Anyway, she has now pre ordered the Kindle Fire.

Thanks all, she appreciated all the responses.

Assuming you're set on a tablet (if I may ask, why? Laptops tend to be sturdier, with better hard drive space etc, and unless they type/surf/whatever while actively walking a lot, not really worth the trade-off), I'd recommend the Samsung Galaxy 10.1. It's generally more durable than the Apple ones, compatibility is less of an issue (that is, it actually is compatible with something other than other Apple products), and runs a wider range of programs.

It is for my friends' 7 year old daughter but I think I would want a tablet as well. They are just more portable - I can put my playbook in my bag lol.

She has decided to go for the Nexus as the 16gb has dropped in price a bit.
