Hi Natalie,
Welcome to Dogsey!
I have not been a member long but am over whelmed by the support I have received.
Just a few ideas for things to teach your dog, they are not set in stone!
1. Be sure that from a young age that the pup will allow you to remove food, ie put some food down for the pup then say "LEAVE" and remove the food far enough away so he/she cant continue eating then replace in front of the pup so they may continue eating telling her/him "Good Boy/Girl".
2. Teach you pup to do toilet in the desired place, it may sound silly but if you ask them to "Be a good girl/boy" when you want them to do toilet they will soon associate the words with what you want them to do. You can use what ever phrase you desire, I usually say "Hurry-Up and be a good boy", can be useful if you need them to empty their bladder or bowels when you need to leave them for a while somewhere where they can not go to the toilet.
3. I don't know what sort of X breed your pup is but all puppies need entertaining so find them things they can chew and teach them not to chew your preceious stuff.
Think about what you give them to play with ie dont give them an old shoe or they will think it is ok to play with your shoes!
4. Of course plenty of exercise (amount depends on breed) is crucial to keeping your pup fit and well.
Hope these ideas help a bit, I am no expert but have had dogs all my life including one from a puppy and many many rescued ones.
Hope you enjoy the site.
