Well, at least I have found her marriage to your father and it was indeed in Bromley, in the Winter quarter of 1828. Vol 2a Page 1429. (this ref is needed for the certificate which might be necessary to show her parents plus her age etc.)

I will see if I can find her in 1911, but if she wasn't born yet then that certificate will definitely be needed unfortunately)

Well, there are several possibilities in and around the Kent area, although of course she may not have been born there at all.

Can you think of any other tiny scrap of information?

Nope, there is nothing for it. You will need that marriage certificate, and from the information on that it should be possible to safely get a foothold in the census records.

Well you've found out a lot very quickly! Many thanks. I was right about her dying at the age of 28 then - very sad. I suppose TB was fairly common then.

Apart from the fact that she had a dog called Gyp, which isn't a lot of help, the only thing I can remember is that I think I'd heard that she lived in Green St Green, which is a village near Orpington, Kent. I don't know if she was born there though.

As suggested, I'll order the marriage certificate.

I'm very grateful to you both for going to so much trouble.

You beat me to it TM........Ancestry etc. charge an extortionate amount.

Once you have the name of the father, and his occupation and address, all of which will be on the cert, you should then be able to find him on the census records and from there the world is your oyster!!!

Oh.....unless she made up the name of her father for appearances sake!! Don't laugh, that happened on one of my husband's lines.

This MIGHT be her:

Ethel Baker
Age in 1911: 6 M
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1910
Relation to Head: Daughter
Gender: Female
Birth Place: St Mary Cray, Kent, England
Civil Parish: Orpington
County/Island: Kent
Country: England
Street Address: 2 Anglesea Road, St Mary Cray, Kent
Marital Status: Single
Registration District: Bromley
Registration District Number: 42
Sub-registration District: Orpington
ED, institution, or vessel: 12
Household Schedule Number: 108
Piece: 3699

Members of Household:
Lewellen Baker 35
Elizabeth Mary Ellen Baker 32
Herbert Lewellen Baker 13
George Baker 9
Daisy Elizabeth Baker 5
Harry Baker 2
Ethel Baker 6 M

IF, and it is a big if, (although there are no other likely contenders for the area you give) this is the right one, her father was a Police Constable with the Metropolitan plods.
