Rupert I'm guessing was allowed, and possibly encouraged, to chase cats from an early age. At one point he'd scream with excitement and nearly yank my arms out of their sockets at the sight of a cat. I've got him to the point where he won't give chase while on leash although it's clear he still really wants to.
Really it is a bit like people who say all sheep worriers can be cured, no they cannot.

Some can, some can be trained not to chase, but those dogs who really wish to kill or HAVE killed can NEVER be totally safe around sheep and aversion therapy does not work.

No amount of socialisation with sheep will prevent those dogs wanting to kill and KILLLING sheep if they get the opportunity.

The same is true for cats.

I am young, and I think it is great that you can tell me what knowledge, ability, training and experience, I have. Thanks for that.

I still fail to see why age was brought into this... What about the older members/people who have ever posted something similar? Is it age related with them too?

I never mentioned INTELLIGENCE.

Another post which demonstrates the only exercise you appear to get is leaping to conclusions.

Where in my post did I say this? :roll

I know you never mentioned intelligence, you appear to have great difficulty with comprehending posts don't you?

Hence why you fail to see why age was brought into this.

Never mind.

Not for nothing do we have a saying "employ a graduate whilst they still know everything "

I only wish that applied here.

There is no way I could keep a cat or a dog or anything/anyone out of my own property, ie out of my yard. If I could then I would do so and quite probably my dog would not be as she is now, because it is 90% certain that the stray dog attack on her, in my front yard, causing severe puncture wounds requiring a fairly hefty vet bill that I had to pay, triggered off her epilepsy - just three weeks after the dog attack.

Perhaps you are able to fence in your property.

I am not.

So, is every dog owner expected to socialise their dog with every other animal?

Jake has NOT been socialised with cats, as I do not have one. I also, do not know anyone with a dog friendly cat. So, socialising him with cats was not, for me, possible.

Jake was socialised with my rabbit... he was great with her, but he will still kill another rabbit if given the chance. I no longer have my rabbit anymore though.

Should he also have been socialised with sheep, cows, birds, squirrels, foxes etc... (I am not saying he will kill any of these btw!)

Malka I live in an apartment. I am speaking specifically about UK dog laws as the cases in question occurred in the UK.

Dog laws in Cyprus are very different from the UK. In general most Cypriots do not like dogs much at all and have no respect for them or for wildlife. Cypriot owned dogs are usually kept caged outside all year round and taken out just for hunting. Then disposed of at the end of hunting season if they prove to be no good at that.

Don't get me started about animal cruelty in this country!

They would not register you to keep a dog if you could not prove you could keep it restrained and that it would not be a nuisance or a danger to anyone.

Of course that only applies to dog's who have OWNERS. Not to the hordes of stray dogs roaming the streets.

Same here.

I actually let Jinty chase cats out of my garden as she is good protection for the buns and the cats p me off by extreting in my garden. One had the balls to steal Jins bone once!!!

She loooves birds too. I let her chase pigeons in the churchyard. I'd let her eat it if she caught one to.

However. I am able to call Jin off these chases if needed. I feel its important, in case she ever wanted to chase one over a road or thought she was allowed to catch my friends cat or chickens. Her recall is pretty bomb proof these days and her "leave it" is pretty good too.
