I'll be watching with interest as from what I've read it doesn't sound as though they understand about hip dyspacia at all.
Until all breeds have to be scored we will not know the status of hips but also as its not a straightforward inheritance & some is nurture rather than nature its not ever going to be completelyeradicated. However its probably also always been with us. Love to know the hip status of wild dogs & wolves. Back in the seventies when scoring first came in had my bitch scored,She was 7 years old, very fit & active, sound & worked in agility. Her hip score was over 60, yet when she died at 11 her hips were still perfectly sound.

The KC's line on this is that they are starting to address the problems of genetic defects with health screening and DNA testing, but in reality this equates to barely getting the sticking plaster out of the box!

It's the restriction of breeding material that a closed stud book gives, and compounding this we have breeding to 'type' which further depletes the gene pool.

The international GSD fraternity may be good at health testing, but breeding for exaggeration is part of the course if you wish to partake in the showring. And IMO this GSD type is one of the worst of any breed in the showring today for exaggeration.

You obviously haven't been to any GSD(Alsatian)club of the United Kingdom shows then, my Cavalier was attacked by the dog that went BIS & it was wearing a muzzle the excuse was that my Cavalier weighing 7 kgs frightened the large GSD(Alsatian)male by looking at him & wagging his tail !! I suggest you go to the next one in November & watch the dogs performances & movement, you will then appresciate what what real exaggeration is.

So The GSDs in Germany are genetically exaggerated are they, obviously not fit for purpose-except that they are fit for purpose & have to prove it on a yearly basis What breed in the UK has to do that ?

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel = Brain size against skull size issues.

Pugs = Of 10,000 in Britain the DNA caould be from only 50.

Pekingese = Danny 2003 crufts winner required to lie on an ice pack for his pictures to prevent overheating.

GSD's = half dog half frog (asuming they mean the sloping rear)

Too many to mention in all.

As somebody else said - I hope the program does at least give some time to talking about some breeds have been improved health wise.
So my Loukar has a small head does he-no he has a malformation at the back of his skull instead of a space just big enough for the spinal cord & spine to enter the skull, he has a much to large hole. His brain has herniated through this hole & stop the cerebral fluid draining away & this means it ends up in the ventricles if his brain which pushes out the brain even more. He has also got syrinx in his spinal column

This paper will not be mentioned in the program

Re the GSD Oh really I do suggest you look at the breed au naturale rather than from photographs Compare the dogs presented at the SV Sieger & the dogs presented at the GSD(Alsatian)Club of the United Kingdom I wonder which are fit for purpose mentally & physically Answers on a postcard please

Can't see any of the "Alsatians" being able to do this or this (at the end the dogs are gaiting OFF lead)

Actually no, I haven't been to an 'Alsatian' breed show but you don't have to to see them. This is the type that is, or was until recent years, the most predominant at general shows under allrounders as well as their own breed specialists. And up until recently I would have agreed that this was the more exaggerated type, but in the last 10 years or so the Germanic type has changed considerably in the topline and hindquarters. One look at this year's Crufts BOB will give an insight into this.

And not saying Alsatians are non exaggerated, of course they are and does it really matter who is right over which one is worse? The truth of it is that they're both caricatures of the orginal type that formed this breed little over a century ago.

i just saw a clip for this on Richard and Judy and the GSD's they showed at a "top show club" were awful - one of them walking round was literally shaking on its back legs and his back end was so dropped - it looked ill and if i had a dog like that i would be taking to the vets to see what was wrong with it.

They also showed a clip from Crufts at the GSD class and the dogs were all the same - really sloped back ends and there legs just didnt look right. Thats not a GSD as I know it anyway.

What is the "gaiting" for? I mean, why is the fast, overreaching trot advantageous?

(This is a genuine question by the way, not a question masked as a dig, as I know it sounds that way, but it honestly isn't meant to - just want to know more about GSDs!)
