But Kennel Club spokeswoman Caroline Kisko said it is "working tirelessly" to help improve the health of pedigree dogs.

"Any dog may be shown but it is up to the judge to decide if it fits the breed standard," she said.

"It is when characteristics become exaggerated that health problems can occur.

"This is something that the Kennel Club does not encourage and actively educates people, including judges, against doing as part of its Fit For Function, Fit For Life campaign."
That makes me so bloody angry. So the KC are now blaming the judges FFS. They need to own up and take responsibility and put proper measures in place, mandatory health testing would be a start. Disgusting organisation that cares more about lining their own pockets than the health of our pedigree dogs. Whilst trying to be seen to be doing something they are in fact doing substantionally nothing!

Just to say we have 2 threads on this now: nothing wrong with that, shows interest, but since they are on an identical subject, but with different information and posters, should we combine them???

One way that could make things different is if dogs tests ie hip score etc were available to judges. I was amazed when I first went to a GSD show in Germany to discover that the judge has the dogs pedigree & health tests to look at for every dog entered in the adult class.

Just been reading about this program and it looks quite good. Without putting my own opinion forward here's some of the sentances mentioned in the paper:

Bulldog = Change of body shape means it often can't mate without human assistance or give birth naturally.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel = Brain size against skull size issues.

Pugs = Of 10,000 in Britain the DNA caould be from only 50.

Pekingese = Danny 2003 crufts winner required to lie on an ice pack for his pictures to prevent overheating.

GSD's = half dog half frog (asuming they mean the sloping rear)

Too many to mention in all.

As somebody else said - I hope the program does at least give some time to talking about some breeds have been improved health wise.
