We've had this discussion many times,
I really don't know what the answer is to the problem of BSL/DDA.
We need to get to the root of the problem, educate people, get rid of BYB who breed with no thought, for money and place there pups anywhere,
We need tighter regulations on breeding advertising and sale of dogs.

All owners regardless of the breed they own should take responsibilty for there dogs actions.

By banning breeds it makes them appeal more to the idiots who want them for an image or to boost there ego.

By having BSL in place which in my opinion has done nothing to improve dog attacks or bites, it drives the scum that own banned breeds further underground.Another problem we have is misidentification of breeds.Your average Joe Public wouldn't know the difference between a SBT & Pitbull, the amount of people that have told us Tyler is a Pitt isn't funny, then question us to whether he has a pedigree, papers etc.....

The alternative, scrap the DDA/BSL,legislate for all dogs, not certain breeds.Good legislation that will work and be enforceable instead of the current farce, that targets dogs purely on breed, breed type & looks, instead of the real cause the owners.

[QUOTE=suze;1142708]this is what i mean - collies have a hearding instinct - so they heard - not doing any harm - but thats what they do -

collies again - why are they so active??? because they are used for hearding and run 100 miles a day - so if you tried keeping a collie on 20 minute walks 2/3 times a day -it would blow its mind - because thats not what they are used to right???? (generally speaking!)

I would like to ask you. Do your collies run 100 miles a day? Do you live on a farm and have them working from early morning until late at night?

I doubt it.

I promised myself wasnt going to comment but had a wine and cant hold it in any longer. theres no such thing as a bad dog .....lots of bad owners though.
Spence was chased by a bc at 4 months old (yes herding insticts., tried to round him up he was terrified and not had confidence to go for a walk since ) his best friend is Zac next doors sbt.
All I can add is theres good and bad in every breed but punish the deed not the breed
Sorry if ive offended any one as a gundog owner thought long and hard before commenting on other breeds just felt this needed saying

I think with any dog, you have to be aware of the breed traits and what the dog has been bred for in the past. And sadly, some staffies in the past have been bred specifically for dog fighting, and in SOME the trait may still be there. But firstly, dog aggression is not related at all to human aggression and secondly, the fact that some staffies might have a problem with other dogs is not a reason to ban the breed. That's like suggesting that because some greyhounds will chase cats then they all should be banned.

As for banned breeds, although I don't agree with it and I think the initial decision to ban them was a bad one, I feel if these dogs were legalised again then it could go very wrong. As we've seen from recent undercover programs and the like, a lot of the pit bulls still being bred are not very nice, and are bred to be human aggressive also. If the breed was legalised I feel those into dog fighting would see it as a sign that what they are doing is not so bad after all. As there aren't any responsible breeders of pit bulls left in the UK (well there can't be), by the time the true lovers of the breed import their dogs and get going with bringing well bred, well socialised examples of the breed back into the country, I'm worried that the not so responsible breeders who all ready have their dogs for not so legal purposes would have totally taken over the market.

Banning breeds doesn't work because those who love the breed and own them responsibly are the ones who reluctantly obey the law. Those who own any breed for the wrong reason will still find a way to own it.

To be honest though, I don't want to cause any trouble but for people who say it should be breed and not deed, there seems to be a lot of border collie bashing... just imagine if it was the other way round, I'm sure many staffy owners wouldn't be happy. Deed not breed should apply to every breed, if you're going to say that then breed should be irrelevant. The way things are being said at the minute, it feels a bit like 'You can't bash staffies because it should be breed not deed, but look how bad these breeds are' which shouldn't be the case if we're saying breed doesn't matter

I might be getting it all wrong but I just found it a bit hypocritical, if I'm honest.

Good post Alice.
I don't think it's fair to criticise a specific breed (largely collies on here) in the name of educating about deed not breed.

A lot of peoples perceptions of specific breeds are created by the examples of that breed they have come into contact with. So...many on here criticise collies, I could criticise a number of breeds on here because of MY experience but where's the point in that? If people truly believe in deed not breed they really shouldn't slate other breeds in order to protect their own.
Just my opinion (I too had promised myself I wasn't going to comment.....)

STOP BASHING MY DOGS - LEAVE THEM ALONE AND GET BACK ON TOPIC - IF ANYONE MENTIONS MY DOGS AGAIN I WILL HAVE NO PROBLEM IN SLATING YOURS - CHILDISH BUT THATS HOW ANNOYED I AM RIGHT NOW

INSOME I AGREE - THIS IS MY POINT
But I don't feel that the breed should be banned because of these few

Like I said, it's not the fact it was collies, it's just that if we're going to say breed is irrelevant, it's not fair to mention any. As Ramble said people seem to be trying to protect their own breed by using another as an example of what is worse, which I personally don't feel is right no matter what the breed, as people wouldn't like it if it was the other way round. If this was a thread about aggressive bcs and BC owners said 'I've been bitten by more staffies, I've only ever seen staffies to be aggresive, not BCs' it wouldn't go down well.

Ok, I'll stop rambling on now, I think I've got my point across! Sorry guys
