I'm calling the RSPCA. Your dog is clearly suffering.

I've not been on for a while as have been sorting out our holiday for this year (not abroad as planned but a nice little cottage in the lakes so Woody can come with us). I've also been busy with my new job working for the Blue Cross, paying to take Woody to gundog training so he can have some fun, good experiences and we can take his training to the next stage. In addition to that Woody and I have been out on nice walks, had some fun running around the meadow with a ball and learning some new tricks (paw and push it - pushing tennis ball with nose to me and then back again).

But what's the point, apparently I have chosen an unsuitable breed for my lifestyle, can't handle the breed, am causing him dementia and am guilty of animal cruelty because I crate him for 4 hours in the morning and 4 hours in the afternoon, 3 days a week. And there's me and other people in our lives thinking we have raised a fantastic, happy, well behaved, loveable little dog. Pffft.
For what my opinion is worth Pidge (prob not much ) I think that Woody is lucky to have you for his Mum. From what I see and hear, his Daddy is pretty much mad about him too.

Putting it into perspective, Woody has three days a week where he is crated for 4 hours in the morning and afternoon, break inbetween where Mummy comes home and exercises and give him lots of attention. The other 4 days of the week, you are around (don't get the impression your off painting the town red every night either) taking him for walks, training him and giving him all the love and devotion you have available. Also he's going on holiday with you.

All, I can say, anyone who thinks that you are not doing a good job must need their head tested. Woody is very lucky to have you and LETS NOT FORGET once he's matured and calmed down a bit (as all pups do once they mature) you'll be able to take him to work with you. How can any of that = anything negative

You're doing a great job with Woody, Pidge, don't let anyone bring you down

pidge hun, If I were you, I would ask at work if its poss to bring woody in with you half the day at work, be it morning of afternoon, then he spends half the day at home,

lets face it, if you explain the difficultys your having with them they would prob be more than happy to have him there,.

Thanks chaps but I don't think there is anything more to say on the matter now. We all have different opinions and have expressed them quite clearly.

I'm not going to discuss it anymore. We're happy, Woody is happy and la vie est belle, n'est pas?

It`s good that you`re happy. But maybe next time you ask for advice you should be more specific. We all have different views, and we are all trying to help each other. Having a bit of a flounce because you don`t like the advice you`ve asked for is a little insulting to the people who have bothered to reply.
It may well be that people don`t agree with you. It doesn`t mean they`re bad people or even that they`re wrong. All it means is that they see things differently. In the end you have a choice to ignore or take heed of what others say. I don`t think being dismissive of them is very polite.

Well very long topic, so maybe I have skim read most and may be repeating whats already been said, thousands of families have dogs and go to work each day, this is a fact, not all these dogs are lunatics because of this, IMO as long as the dog is getting exercise morning and night, and a break in the day, at 6 months of age this should be sufficient, as usually they tend to sleep a lot, unfortunately this dog is probably going through the normal chewing, wrecking stage most pups go through at this age, and the original poster wanted to find out how they can prevent this happening, I personally think a crate for such long lenghts of time, is not appropriate, I wouldnt use a crate for this length of time with any of my pups, because I feel they need to be able to move about a little more than a crate allows, (I do use crates for shorter times, and my dogs love them so I am not against crating) if you have room in somewhere like a garage or a spare room in your house, I found these http://www.croftonline.co.uk/product...puppy+pen+sets, fantastic, when I had a litter I erected this in one of our rooms, this allowed the pups to move about freely but NOT get into anything that could harm them while I was away from home, as the pups left and I kept one of them, I used this pen to contain her while I was out, yes they are more expensive than crates, but do allow the dog to have movement, play with toys etc, without damaging anything, it can be easily dismantled and moved outside out of the way, I know this is not the most ideal thing but fact is in this day and age, people need to go to work, and that should not prevent them from having a dog, so long as when they are not at work they are spending time with their dogs and socialising them and giving them the contact they need.
