I take your point but you could say the same about drinking - plenty of people drink alcohol in a responsible way recreationally, but for some people it becomes a dependency that ruins lives. If you are alcohol dependent it doesn't matter whether it is lager, vodka or meths you are drinking - the problem is the same. On the other hand, having a glass of wine after a long day or a pint down the pub of an evening is a perfectly normal activity for a lot of people. I view drugs in the same way - therefore I think that yes, there are soft and hard drugs - you CAN become dependent on both but there is still a massive difference between someone smoking a joint to unwind and somebody jacking up on heroin.
If you take the view you have above then there is no middle ground - your answer is simply don't take drugs of any kind ever. I personally believe you have to look at it in a more realistic way - people do use cannabis recreationally and still manage to be functioning members of society... your thinking that it is wrong and the fact that it is illegal is not going to stop them.
The police authorities have more pressing matters to deal with than a recreational cannabis user and in the real world they often turn a blind eye - if you have ever attended a music festival you will know what I mean! Does it not make more sense to focus efforts on the hardcore element of drug dealers and find a way for these recreational users to continue without lining the dealers pockets??
Oh and Rich C - thanks for the link, I will def have a look... I also find the subject very interesting!
