Ticks, and the risk of Lyme disease to humans

Going out in the countryside? Take a pair of tweezers

Cases of Lyme disease, which can be carried by ticks, have been on the rise in the UK in recent years.

Ticks are often attracted to animals such as dogs and can also target humans when out and about in the countryside. So what steps can people take to minimise the risks?

Louise Hubball reports.

This video features Dartmoor park ranger Robert Steemson, Stella Huyshe-Shires, Dr Mark Kealy from the Health Protection Agency and farmer Morris Retallick.

A couple of years back a friend of mine had a bite on her arm
The Dr freaked that it might have been a tick and put her on a months worth of super strong antibiotics that made her really ill for the full month!

I can beat that one - found one on my cleavage last year after a visit to Scotland. Me, hubby and mother in law all at it with my very expensive eyebrow tweezers (the only ones I had to hand at the time)... good job I get on well with the MIL!

My friend had Lyme Disease a few years ago, she was very ill for some time.

Another friend's dog died of it.

It is very tricky to spot often.

The best site on Lyme Disease is this:

I live in the country, and tick incidents seem to be on the rise around the world.

I have a three acre fenced back yard BUT it is on a natural deer and moose path, so they simply hop the 4 foot fence and stroll through, sometimes stopping to graze. As a result, even though I live in a low tick risk area (Northern Alberta) one of my dogs has managed to come away from roaming in my own yard with a deer tick that was positive for lyme disease. The antibiotics for a month were very hard on her system.

I hate the nasty ******s.
