Having dewclaws is not something that dogs are "prone to".
They exist for a purpose.
Some breeds have dewclaws only on the front legs, some have them removed, some do not.
They can be very useful for holding onto to bones etc, and can be used for traction.
In some dogs they are loose and floppy in others they are firmly attached.
Some breeds have, in their breed standard, explicit reference to dew claws.on their hind legs. They are MEANT to have them.
Fewer and fewer vets will remove dew claws as a matter of course now, since the docking ban and so more dogs appear with them than before.
