New raw dog food student! Advice please.

Hi all, I have just started both my young dogs on a raw food diet. Would like feedback please if im doing it right please!. I ffed raw chiken wings, liver and fresh raw meat from butchers. Pigs trooters and occasional big bones. I have tried them on raw mackeral, took a bit of sniffing but they did eat it in the end. They dont get many bones unless its in the chicken is this ok please anyone? Thankyou

Hi,
Your dog needs the calcium from bones.
You could ask your butcher to do some chicken mince with the carcass minced into it, also lamb with the ribs minced into it.
organ meat should only be fed once or twice a week.
You really need to feed raw fruit and veg..............liquidise it or grate it...but dont cook it.
Alternatively feed a supplement like Dorwest keepers mix instead of veg.
You can also feed an egg once a week for calcium (raw).
Hope this helps, and good luck

You should ideally be feeding 2-3% of your dogs ideal adult weight, and the ratio for raw feeding is...

80% meat, 10% bone, 5% liver, 5% other offal (kidney etc)

I have to say i dont feed any veg (except the occasional carrot) and i also dont suppliment. Thats the difference between raw feeders and BARF feeders, BARF usually involves veg, suppliments etc, while true raw feeding is simply meat, bone and offal.

I feed Kira:

Chicken carcusses
Chicken mince (because carcusses dont have enough meat left on them)
Chicken wings
Lamb breast ribs
Lamb mince
Organ mince (mixture of various organs)
Tripe
Pork (heads, shanks, hocks, trotters (but trotters very fatty)
Turkey wings & necks
Heart
Liver
Kidney
Pig pluck (when i can get it)
Sprats
Mackral
Sardines

BAsically anything you can pick up cheap from the butchers or supermarkets.

If it has a bone in then even better!!

the ones in tomato salt have a high salt content and contains additives. Tinned fish should only be fed if it is in sunflower oil really

Some links that you might find useful:

There is also a yahoo group called "Rawfeeding" which is a wealth of info, I'd recommend looking it up.

I feed raw, and feed whole chicken quartered rather than mince or carcasses. Every now and then our local somerfield or Co-op sells whole chicken for £2.00, I buy as many as I can and quarter them, then freeze them. Also she gets:-

Minced Venison (from DAF)
Lamb Hearts, Lamb neck (whole) lamb breast - from my local farm shop
Liver daily ( a small piece)
Lamb kidneys a few times a week
Green tripe most mornings
She won't eat egg, is always sick after it.
Sardines, mackerel or herring now and then

Carrots every day, just because she likes them stuffed in her kong.
Occasionally dried pigs ears.
No other treats apart from a sliver of orange or apple, or banana when we are eating. And cheese and the odd bit of biscuit or crisp when we are nibbling.

Evening primrose oil and fish oil capsules daily. she thinks these are sweets!!
