I was watching Click on BBC News 24 earlier & they had a piece about how Apple works. It pretty much confirmed my impression that they like to keep very tight control of what you can/can't do. In fact, the presenter finished by saying they'd been warned that Apple don't comment on the internal workings of their company and by doing a speculative program like they did, they may harm future relations with Apple...
Having said that, it was mentioned that maybe the idea behind keeping tight control was to ensure the user has a quality, trouble free experience. I'm guessing Mac users will agree not much goes wrong... Personally, I'll stick to reputable Linux distros that start off stable and then allow me to
fsck them up however I see fit.
