Please light a candle for Sammy
Please light a candle tonight for a very special boy.
Sammy left us this morning and crossed the bridge after much agoinising on everyones part.
Sammy was on foster with me after being returned from a home in quite a state. He had a lovely time with us and enjoyed 2 fabulous holidays at Cannock Chase and in Dartmoor. We thoroughly enjoyed having him with us and formed a very strong bond of trust with him.
Unfortunately Sammy's behaviour was deteriorating and it was felt by all concerned, the rescue and the vets that that there was a neurological problem that we could not help with.
Sammy went from loving dogs to fighting constantly with the dogs he lived with and knew, as well as others that he met. He 'forgot' people that he had known and loved and would not let them near him, and many other behaviours that were so out of character.
The worst by far was when he would have a moment, and attack me. He has bitten me several times in the last 2 months and instantly he is remorseful and my best friend again. Yesterday unfortunately I had to go to A+E to be patched up.
It was very sad to see Sammy the way he had become and to go through the traumatic experience today at the vets to the end with him, with strangers he did not know and trust.
Instead I choose to remember him the way he was....
A boy who was all over you like a bad rash with cuddles
He gave the wettest kisses in the world, real slobber chops
Every morning when Dougie let him out of his bed he would come and give me a kiss before going off for toilets and breakfast.
He loved his walks and particularly his swimming - he would just chuck himself in.
He would constantly check in with you on a walk for a fuss and a reassuring stroke.
Tummy tickles were his very .
He smiled just before he kissed you.
The way he talked when you started the walk
The way he lifted his paws so you could put his harness on/off
How he loved his nickname of Silly Sammy
There is so much more to remember about Sammy and he will forever be in our hearts as one of our much loved foster dogs.
Sorry we couldnt make you better Sammy. Run free in the Sumerlands with all of your friends and we will see you again one day.
Sammy enjoying the good times in life...
