European Coalition to end Animal Experiments Email Campaign
12 million animals are used annually in experiments in Europe and YOU have a unique opportunity to help them NOW.
There is a key vote at the European Parliament's Agriculture (AGRI) Committee on a revision to the animal experiments directive on
11th March 2009. MEPs will choose between two visions of science for the 21st century:
Continuing cruel science:
- Experiments on monkeys, cats and dogs
- Suffering which is both severe and prolonged
- Repeated painful experiments on the same animal
- Official approval not required for most experiments
OR
Advancing humane science:
- Targets to wean science off the use of animals
- Tighter controls on when animals can be used
- More funding for alternatives
- Openness (only confidential and personal information withheld)
- EU citizens are clear which vision they want for Europe – over 80% of respondents to a European Commission survey want a ban on the use of monkeys, cats and dogs, and a clear majority are against animal experiments generally, even for medical experiments.
MEPs must listen to EU citizens and vote in favour of advancing humane science.

AGRI MEPs will be voting on 11th March 2009. Their decisions will form the basis of a new law which could be in force for the next 20 years.
