I only use Drontal on mine because of the worry re collies & also Milbemax does not treat one form of worm that dogs pick up from sheep which is also zoonotic & my dogs work around sheep a lot.
Milbemax has some claim to treating lungworm now but i would rather use course of Panacur or Advocate

This thread is very interesting for me. I had no idea that Milbemax could have a adverse effect on Collies. The things you learn, eh?!

I have a crossbreed who I think has Collie in her. I know now not to give her Milbemax!

I will stick with Drontal for now.

[QUOTE=mishflynn;1275403]abit dodgey for collies, from the attached website

[B][I]Special Precautions and Warnings

Studies with milbemycin oxime indicate that the margin of safety in certain dogs of Collie or related breeds is less than in other breeds. In these dogs, the recommended dose should be strictly observed.

Bloomin eck !!! I didn't know that - I have just given her it too...... should I be worried ??

I shall make sure that from now on I just use drontal ......

I think if you DNA test your collie for the gene that makes them have adverse reactions to certain drugs and they are clear then you are safe.

As long as you have given the correct dose (or slightly under) then I wouldn't worry, it's just the margin for error is smaller in collies than other breeds.

A good thread. I had never heard of the other wormer but cant use drontal on our boxer's as it really upset's the stomach, and i near lost puppies from the Drontal, however I use sherleys paste for the puppies alternating with panacur fluid, I have also used advocate, which I find really good.

I use Milbemax on Milo as Drontal makes him very sick. I do have trouble finding it round here. Milo is fine on Milbemax.
I use Drontal on Shady though as she is fine with it and I can't get milbemax for such a large dog.

I use Milbemax on both of mine, with no adverse affects.

I did use Drontal on my collie though and never tried Milbemax on her.
