Dog seems constipated and back passage seems to be blocked :-(

I have a litter of yorkshire terrier pups at 7 weeks old and one of them seems constipated and the back passage seems to be blocked. Its little backside is swollen and sore to touch and she is moaning a lot. She had a little bit of poop sticking to her wee bum but we have washed it away with warm water. We thought she would be alright but she is still swollen and sore.

Is there anything i can do, or should i just take her to the vet. I wont be able to take her to the vet til 5pm tomorrow (about 20 hours time) so i would like to know if there is anything i can do in the meantime. Would human laxatives work?

I don't know anything about breeding, but hopefully somebody will have an answer. The only thing I want to say is, I really don't think you could give a 7wk old pup any human laxatives If they were mine, I would at least phone and SPEAK to a vet if you cannot get to one, that would be my first move? Can you phone your vet, they must have someone on emergency duties to answer any calls?

Call the emergency vet now - that's what I would do.

Good luck x

...... I think 20 hours might be a tad too late perhaps????? Please speak to somebody in the veterinary profession for this little guy's sake, you owe it to him! Good luck.

Phone the vet and ask what you can do until you can get there. You can use Liquid Parafin but you need to ask how much to give her. Massaging the tum with warm wet cotton wool (like mums tongue) can stimulated a bowel movement You need to have her checked out to make sure it is only constipation

Phoned the vet. He said to give it some liquid parafin, which i dont have, but i have olive oil and he said that would do. Also he said to use a cotton bud with vaseline (petroleum jelly) to free up anything in her bum. So gonna try that now. Thanks guys!

And Happy New Year!
