Help on 2nd dog 4 SBT (sorry, another 1) Wot breed?

Hello Everyone, I am new here so be gentle!!!
I am owned by Cooper - my male 11 month old SBT.

I picked up Cooper from a man that was keeping him outide and feeding him 100% Tripe. Until we got him, Cooper had no socialisation with any other dogs apart from a 2 year old female SBT and a very young puppy boxer - who he was kept with for breeding I think. After a couple of walks off the lead - we thought he had slight dog aggression so he has been on the lead ever since and we start dog training soon. But it turns out his crying and yelping when he sees another dog is due to him wanting to play - but hes so boisterous (sp?) not many people will let him...

We have been thinking hard about getting a second dog for him. We would definately get it from Pup = and we would get a female... but we are not sure whether this would help. He does seem to miss his friends. obviuosly we would socialise the pup as much as poss = I have had dogs from pup b4 so know what to do.

We are also not sure about the breed. We would look for either a SBT or another dog that has the same sort of profile - same short hair, exercise levels etc...

I just wanted some advice - as a dog is for life so its a big decision.

Thanks x

Hi
we have two staffys- one of each sex and all is fine. Ours are 18 months apart. The only thing I would advise is that 12 months is still very immature in a staffy and so two can be hard work.......

are you looking to get one in the very near future or to wait a while ?

but good luck

Hello Lel, Thanks for your reply.
We would wait a while - probably another 6 months. Yes I agree - 2 SBTS is fine - my partner had 2 before. Would you advise is to wait then?

It all depends on your present dog really- but knowing how boisterous staffys can be then yes, waiting a bit longer might be better but then again each dog is different

Hi I have two staffords to both bitches. And I would say wait at least until your present dog is 18 months old. My two are now 2 and 5 months and have to say mine will play "non stop" if allowed. But the older one is sensible and does listen to what is said. That said the pup does too now and like Lel has said it depends on your first dog.

But I sould say any breed of dog or mongrel will be okay but remember Bull breeds play rough some breeds may not like it.

Its never adviced to get another dog too close after the first 1, its a lot easier for the hiearki at home if there is at least 2 years age difference....but then its also depends on what u are after....but even though its a bitch u want i would wait a bit longer...so that the first one reach a higher level of maturity...

Hello Everyone, Thanks for your replys.
If we decided on getting a 2nd dog we would wait until around June 2005 as I think getting a pup in spring / summer is alot easier as there is more daylight hours for socialising, and we can save up a bit of money to get a well bred pup. Thanks for your help!!!

now that the second dog thing has been addressed it's important to start socialisng Cooper as soon as possible, he's at a good age of 11months and hopefully other grown male dogs will still see him as a pup and not get into fights with him. Get to puppy classes asap as it is extremely important for bull-breeds especially when you bear in mind that there may be a mix of larger dog x staff in him (u said he was 25kgs already).

Good luck!!

As normal Azz is talking sense. Follow his advice and get your dog used to other dogs, and teach him good manners it will all work for the pup when if you get one to learn good manners.

Oh by the way 05 summer is not far away if you want a "well bred" stafford pup start looking now at dogs you like ask about breeders and then make a shortlist then hopefuly get on a breeders shortlist (good breeders have waiting lists) and you will be lucky to get on some at all.

Just a tip people who have pups from good breeders are always eager to talk of how good they are.
